My early B5 order was just marked shipped!

Hey everyone,
I'm tearing apart the LUCI interface and am trying to figure out how to call the 'Save&Apply' button though the CLI.  I want to edit the crontab. Really wish it were just a php controller or something....

Edited contab to run the following every hour. Im expecting an increase in hashrate.

killall -s 9 cgminer

/etc/init.d/cgminer restart

*/3 *  *   *   *     /usr/bin/cgminer-monitor
0,30 * * * * sh /usr/bin/restart.sh

Boom!

S1-1 - 218 - 5hr - 437gh - 1HR Restarts
S1-2 - 250Mhz - 5hr - 466gh - 1/2hr restarts.

This is an increase of over 40GH on both miners for me!
I'm going to clock-up S1-1 and see if I see increases at 1/2hr intervals.

I encourage those experiencing degrading performance over time to do something similar. You lose less than 10 seconds of mining per restart.

This is a problem...on this particular boot its showing a time difference of 24 minutes which causes this result...Im sure I have seen as much as 8-9 hour difference between the uptimes
This miner was rebooted only 3 minutes yet the miner status page claims its been running 27 minutes which is impossible and the "hashrate" shows it...so how often is the cgminer process restarting behind the scenes or what is going on here BITMAIN?

How did you reboot it?  Web UI, or ssh?  I see this whenever I reboot through ssh... or if I just turn off the PSU.  If I reboot through the web UI, or if I use the poweroff command in ssh, everything comes back up properly.

I rebooted through the web interface reboot option...when I power off via PSU Im suspecting that is when the multiple hour time difference happens and that is when the times are reversed...the miner status page shows minutes and the main miner uptime claims to be hours...haven't tested that aspect enough...for the record when I first turn the machines on the first thing I also do is go in and reboot them through the UI..have done this since S1 days...so many issues so many miners so little time  Smiley

I can confirm that this is the case with all of my B3 miners. SSH reboots cause the cgminer uptime to be erroneous upon restart. Web interface restarts reset the values appropriately.

I have managed to keep my hash rate at about 420gh on both units but only by using 218 (212 in the cases where 218 is not stable) and by restarting cgminer every 2 hours.  Any longer and the hashrates begins to fall below 380 and begins the slow pull down of the average hashrate value.

Hey BitMain...

The price of BTC is BACK to $585+...OK...  Grin

Could you adjust your S3's price back to 0.65-.66 BTC ...or lower... Huh

ZiG

you are correct they should drop price.   but the sp30 double miss on gh and on power makes the s-3  the best item to buy.

I would feel happy if it drops to .66 or .65 , but they may raise it more.

With diff doing 2  under 10 % jumps maybe 3 under 10%   they could move price to .69 and I think it will sell.

I am looking to buy 2 more I want to see it drop to .64  I will not buy until my 2 come on fri and test well.

Considering that the SP30 is almost in-line with the current S3 prices, I can only imagine how much more cost effective the S3 product lineup will be in a month from now.

The best thermal pads are not as good as the worst grease....I can see why they said not to use pads as the heatsinks were machined with a certain tolerance to be in direct contact with the ASICs (I will find out how much now when I take 1 machine apart again) pads are garbage just use a good grease and you can be messy applying it like Bitmain a la birthday cake icing style but its better not to get it where its not needed...the inside should pretty much cover the metal part with grease for optimal heat transfer ...I am about to take off the sinks from 1 of the machines and reverse the blades to see if it makes a difference..this machine went from 420ish to 400 now after a reboot  Angry

I can absolutely confirm that all of my B3 units front-side heatsinks were not anchored down properly. Burrs on the aluminum were keeping the tension springs from working at all and the screws were backed out. The HS itself started getting warm and functioning properly after reapplying. I used ceramic paste.

I can also absolutely confirm that this did nothing for my hashrate. I feel better knowing that the units are properly torqued now, but nothing about the way these units hash is heat-related, I am almost certain of this. When I had my BTCkenstein put together, I couldnt probe a part of the miner that was over 31C
128  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: August 01, 2014, 02:42:08 AM
why dont you try thermal pads...Huh

Just as a side, BMT told me specifically not to use pads.

I unplugged an old miner and promptly plugged this new, potentially damaged one right in.

......................and!?!?!?!?!?!

Man I tried.. They said driver would not be back until 7:15. They close @ 7PM. lol. I told them to hold it and I'll just pick up there tomorrow.
I hate when this happens. At least it's in town and not stuck in a shipping fiasco like some.

Missed my UPS guy and he didn't leave them. Called in and I'm going to try and pick them up from the UPS office this evening. The one time this dude comes before 6PM.

if ur packages arrived at the warehouse, go call the UPS, and ask them if you can pick it up by urself now
u'll always ended up dissapointed if u want to wait them to deliver it
trust me, just pick it up urself, then mine immediately

I got mine today, heard him from the basement with his squeaky ass brakes. Ran upstairs to see him "tossing" them up to the front of his brown van, and then deliver them to me.

He got my signature, verified the address, I asked him if he needed any ID and he said "no, whats your last name".. Satisfied with my answer he said "Have a nice day." I told him you too and went inside.

Then what happened?

I know, I'm gripped, the anticipation is killing me.

After going inside, I realized these were heavier then I wished to carry at that point in my life. So I set both boxes down, rubbing my back gently, as I can get some aches from time to time.

Staring thoughtlessly at my new miners, still wrapped in their plain brown boxes I remembered 3 things.

First, I really did not like the new waitress at the restaurant down the street, she was quite ugly.
Second, I was thirsty and wanted a beer.
Finally, I really had better get these things down stairs, before my wife arrived home.

I'm okay if this becomes a thing. Please continue.

To all of those who have worked the front heatsink and paste. How tight did you go when re-attaching? I normally wouldn't be paranoid about things like this but it seems like they weren't that tight from the factory at all. Certainly don't want to crush any SMCs.

Tighten until resistance?

There is WAY too much BAD information in this thread...from overclocking to advice...WOW

STEP 1: VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Update the firmware IMMEDIATELY, and do not tick the box to save settings....you will have to wait a few minutes...lets say 3 minutes TO BE SAFE..DO NOT POWER CYCLE THE UNIT WHEN UPGRADING...then re-enter all your pool info...if this is too hard to do, then shut your machine off and call it a day...

I have done the front and back heatsinks....the front is not really what needs the proper surface contact as much as the back...hate to break the news but after reading through this thread I cant stop cringing...and don't know where to start...so here we go... since you only are concerned about the tiny little heatsinks which clearly are not as important as the MASSIVE ones in the middle of the unit  Huh   Shocked

DO NOT USE ARCTIC SILVER 5 IT IS CAPACITIVE..OR ANYTHING WITH SILVER IN IT.... STOP THIS NOW and if you have done this....get cleaning using a proper electronics alcohol FFS  Roll Eyes

Not Electrically Conductive:
Arctic Silver 5 was formulated to conduct heat, not electricity.
(While much safer than electrically conductive silver and copper greases, Arctic Silver 5 should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. While it is not electrically conductive, the compound is very slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridges two close-proximity electrical paths.)

some good grease to use is GC Extreme but a little thick for large application...GC Supreme works much better for that....

as for attachment of the semi-useless heatsink...do all 4 starting with the outside ones first then the inner 2, then tighten them 2 off kind of like when you change a car tire..if you don't know what I mean then I suggest learning how to change a tire properly for starters..bolts make all the difference but I digress  Cheesy

As for clocking/stable running units...I am working on the how and why...so far I have seen every unit behave differently and hate to say it but the grease did not help the hashrate drop AT ALL

BITMAIN really needs to fix the firmware on these units...at least make a universal interface...this one is a hack of S1/S2 but missing all the basics like not having the page timeout, the option to have password saved in browser for starters
More important, there is a bug in firmware which shows inaccurate stats, for example when power cycle the unit, it shows uptime of 8 hours and the unit showing 1 minute, resulting in WRONG average hashrate for many hours

I've been poking about the front-side HS for a minute simply because BMT emailed me instructing me to do so. I believe they've emailed a few other users giving instructions to do the same. Regardless of other's experiences, my front-side HS went from cold to the touch (ineffective) to very warm after the cleaning.

I HIGHLY doubt it has anything to do with the paste and most to do with the fact that the heatsinks were not tightened down at all in the first place. You can talk bout spring tensioners all you want, but with how roughly those HS blocks were made, 3/4 of my springs were caught on aluminum burrs.
133  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 31, 2014, 06:54:32 PM
Quick question.   My Antminer on any clock setting seems to run at the expected hashrate for a few hours until eventually dropping off a few hours later.   The stock clock drops down to 410 gh/s after a little white and then the overclock speeds drop even further.   I do have 4 power connectors attached.   Any suggestions?

You are experiencing the same symptoms that many of us are experiencing. I have tried everything, including using a highly modified external cooling system to keep all components at 31C.

BMT will tell you to take the front heatsink off and clean all of the thermal paste, reapply, and try again.
Clocking down to 212 might get you stable at 428GH, but you'll still have to restart about every 12 hours or so.

Also try dropping down to two connectors.

The option to edit my B5 order just disappeared, so I'm guessing I'll be getting an update soon!
136  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 31, 2014, 03:49:13 AM
You guys had plenty of time to place an order before the bitcoin price tanked.  Seriously stop complaining and acting as if the sky is falling if they raise their prices.  If you are a serious miner, you already have your S3's, or ordered them already.  If you are a casual miner, you shouldn't care about .01-.1 price fluctuations.

I'm getting really tired of people coming in this thread and flaming the only reliable mining company in the business that constantly gets better and better.  Seriously.  Stop it.

This. My bet is that a bunch of SCRYPT miners are dumping their hardware and jumping ship. They're all CONSTANTLY being screwed, you'd think $10-$20 wouldn't make someone sweat...

And I'd love for someone to show me a foundry or PCB manufacturer that takes BTC.
If you want Bitmain to lower their prices, they would undoubtedly have to dump untold amounts of BTC in an effort to shore up fiat resources.

That alone could negatively effect your fiat ROI in a much more severe way.
137  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Alpha Technology Litecoin (Scrypt) ASIC Miner Order Batch 1 Now! on: July 31, 2014, 03:41:48 AM
I just read the announcement. WOW.
They basically said:

We're going to bend you over, it might hurt but we're going to use lube, even though our T&Cs don't say we have to use lube. No we don't NEED to use lube, we're lubing up as a gesture of goodwill.

A gesture you should be grateful for. People have been crying out for lube, we talked to some guy that didn't lube and we knew we couldn't get away with that, so we decided to throw some in.

Yes you have to pay extra for it.

Oh you don't want to?

Well then you're just going to get F**ked

This. lol.

Several hours ago I posted a screenshot asking why I do only have ~250GH/s while the miner is powered with a 1600W PSU and all ASICs looked fine. I restarted the miner and let it run a few hours. Now it looks like this:

It seems that some ASICs can not be detected. What can I do in this case?
Thank you

Have you taken the unit apart and checked your thermal paste?

When BMT recommends checking the thermal paste, are they talking about the front-side or back-side heatsink?
There are two per blade. Is it pointless to remove backside because there are no SMCs?

139  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 30, 2014, 05:10:42 PM
Yes "warranty' have not much value in the mining hardware.
41 - 42 was my temperature peaks at stock clocks.
I don't have any link to the thermal grease for now.
I'm searching for it to buy the same brand or the alternative one having >3 conductivity.
But most of the products I'm seeing is of conductivity 1.
I will post here the link if I find it or some else who has experience in doing this will support here.

They are talking about removing the front-side heatsinks, right?
140  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 30, 2014, 04:52:44 PM
I put a ticket with bitmaintech support and I wish to share it with you all.
My S3 was hashing low at 400 - 420. Long term average was 421.
Bitmaintech engineer told me to remove the heat sink, clean it with a cloth and apply thermal new paste.
They recommended to buy "Dow Coining thermal paste grease" for this purpose.
Which can be sourced from ebay or amazon.
If its not available at your location buy any good thermal grease which has conductivity above 3.
Also I asked then about warranty issues if that type of a hack ws done, and they assured me that no warranty will be void for doing it.

I received the same message Yesterday. Maybe they're on to something? Are you B3?
