121  Economy / Speculation / Re: If you could convert your paycheck into bitcoin (like automatically) on: August 31, 2013, 09:47:53 PM
Well, doesn't it depend on the currency you are being paid in? If it's US, Cdn, "stable" money, it's fine, short term. Plus, I need enough fiat for my mortgage, FOOD, etc. But it is rational to allocate some (speculative) amount to Bitcoin. Wouldn't look askance at Gold, either.

For volatile investments, such as bitcoin, if you are trying to invest in it, a good strategy is to time-cost average buy.  This means you buy with a fixed amount of your cash on a regular basis.

For example $1000/week.  Bitcoin is 100, 10 coins, bitcoin is 50, 20 coins, bitcoin is 250, 4 coins
When it goes down you get more then when it is up, but over all, you come out ahead without too much risk of picking the "wrong" time.

Takes some discipline, but removes some of the emotion. This is good. Also, it's what I do. NOT even close to $1000 however, LOL.
124  Economy / Economics / Re: Why do people trust fiat money? on: August 31, 2013, 02:27:39 PM
It's sort of like when you were a kid, and you were afraid to look under the bed, because you thought there was a monster there. Only in fiat money's case, there IS a monstor...

Somehow, I think thats going to be least of our worries.

I remember reading somewhere on a site for mechanical watch enthusiasts about how great it would be that THEIR watches would still be working after a nuclear blast! As opposed to those who were relying on their inferior Quartz watches. I'd laugh, but, well, you know...
126  Other / Politics & Society / Re: #RacistVan on: August 30, 2013, 08:17:25 AM
The first thing that leapt to mind on reading the thread title was: "Racist Vancouver". Something about a woman who was kicked out of a McD's in Vancouver for poor English skills?

Anyway, back on topic, I wonder how dangerous driving that van around might be.

My brain always reads this as "Probably Fair". Could be it was trying to tell me something!
128  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Plausibility of Syria strike ? on: August 30, 2013, 05:07:22 AM
I say it is likely. The strategy seems to be an attempt to bait Iran into joining the conflict in order to justify full scale invasion of Iran.

Don't think the president wants to be impeached. Doubtful that we'll see American boots on the ground. Wouldn't surprise me to see some Drones going in though. What a mess this is turning out to be.

It's a great bet, IMHO. For 1 BTC, the most you can lose is about $120, but what you can gain is many times that. Even with 50/50 odds, I'd sure take that bet!

134  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: BEWARE: LocalBitcoins Screenshot Scam on: August 23, 2013, 02:16:32 PM
Local BTC needs to fix their shit NOW.

There isn't any amount of programming that localbitcoins can do that can prevent victims from giving away their bitcoins when fooled by a scammer.  localbitcoins can't reprogram the brains of the humans that use their site.  What exactly do you want them to fix?

Exactly. if you can read and follow instructions, you should be fine. No need to send anyone the screenshot, as you can tell when the transaction is funded right on the site when you log in. When the funds are released, THEN the person selling the coins gets the code, letting the buyer know that the coins are now in the buyer's wallet.

For that matter, even if he doesn't fund the transaction before the meet, you can still go, since he can fund the transaction while the two of you drink coffee. I think it takes 3 confirmations before the transaction can proceed. Meanwhile, you can talk, it's quite stress free. When he gives you the release code, you KNOW the coins are in your wallet. (This is from the point of view of the buyer, sorry, I've never sold any... yet).

If you really want to be safe, you can give localbitcoins your mobile number, and SMS texts will be sent to you upon funding/release actions having taken place. Very well thought out, but you MUST follow the rules and use "COMMON" sense. The Heinlein definition of Common Sense?
