Does anyone know how to re-fit a conventional SHA-256 miner (like KNC's Jupiter) for another SHA-256 altcoin?
Is there a second life for these at all?

KNC offered buyers who had pre-ordered a Neptune (~3TH/s bitcoin miner) to be exchanged for a pre-order of the Titan (100 MH/s scrypt).
I took the opportunity, because 3 TH isn't much anymore -- only about 0.3 today and a lot worse at delivery time -- and the Titan looks more promising on ROI.
The price of Litecoin will go up with two dynamics: The ASIC revolution in the Litecoin network (as happend with Bitcoin) -- and also when the price of Bitcoin rises -- it will pull Litecoin and other altcoins up with it.
We've seen both dynamics in the past year, and this will happen again.
There are three major developers that I know of racing to get the Litecoin ASIC in first: UK-based Alpha Technology, Netherlands-based Mining ASIC Technologies, and now also the Swedish KNC.
Does anyone know of any others?
I don't know which one will be the first to win the race, but I got orders running with all three.

Last time KNC notified their customers about the Neptune was in this email on 4 February. It appeared it wasn't going as smoothly as the last time around.
" Dear All It’s been a while since our last communication and this update is overdue and we do apologise for that. In this newsletter we want to update you on 3 important things.Neptune Development Progress, Jupiter sales and our new project - Plan B.
Neptune Development Progress Over the last few months things have most certainly not stopped here at KnC, and we have made massive progress on our 20nm chip and it will be one of the first 20nm chips to come out to market with the strong support of our partners, TSMC, AST and Alchip. The backend engineering teams have been working 7 days a week around the clock to bring this chip to market as fast as possible. We have of course learnt a lot from our previous 28nm design and with that knowledge we will squeeze even more out of our 20nm chip. The news we can tell you today is that we have a further reduction in power consumption of around 11% from our initial calculations, which means we can squeeze in even more cores. The core count per package is already over 1000 and with every reduction in power usage we will add in more cores to maximize the performance. This is a great bit of news.
Jupiter sales We are no longer going to offer Jupiter for sale. We had intended to offer Jupiter following the end of our Network Protection phase, however things move fast in the Bitcoin world and we have decided to end all future sales of Jupiter. We know this may disappoint some people waiting for buy more Jupiters, however, we have some exciting news that we would like to share today and its called ‘Plan B’.
Plan B As you are all aware we broke many world records in releasing the 28nm chip in such a short amount of time. We are a very ambitious company but even for us, to go “all in” and not be able to deliver on our performance targets, like our competition, would be completely unacceptable to us as a company and everything we stand for. So today we are introducing, Plan B. To make sure that everyone who has paid for their Neptune we are building a data centre like no other. It is located in the north of Sweden not far from Facebook and other Mega Data Centres and it’s totally powered by renewable energy. Over the next few months we are bringing online enough hashing power to make sure that any delay in the Neptune timeline will be compensated with a completely free hosted hashing packages to all fully paid customers. In the addition to this commitment, as part of Plan B, for all Neptune customers, we will be offering a free conversion to a hosted hashing package where we will simply fill your wallets directly and you won’t have to worry about anything else. All the other costs taken care of by us. We are able to do this by using our 28nm chips which is why all products that we have coming out of our factory in the next few months will go into building and supplying the Plan B facility. If, during the course of development of Neptune, there is any threat to the timelines for delivery, those delays will not result in the loss of any mining time for our Neptune customers. We will release more details of this as we get closer to the delivery date, but for now we have one of the world’s largest data centres to build.
Thanks KnCMiner Team "

Bitcoin's value derives from supply and demand -- and demand is a function of distribution and utility. If someone had them all they would be worth nothing.
If you want to find this out for yourself -- just launch and new coin and hold all the bajillion twatcoins yourself. How much will they be worth?

Happy to hear.
I visited them -- they're good guys and very innovative.
They are connecting Safello to all sorts of European payment systems, credit cards, SEPA, IBAN etc.

I am sorry to hear that. Did someone ever turned on profitable dealing with BFL?
*crickets* *chirp chirp* *chirp chirp* *chirp chirp* ...... ... .

Perhaps Highbitcoin.com is a company to order from. Their first batch is already sold out, but if you're willing to wait to June, you can get 24 TH by ordering six Callistos ($10K each).
If you want that amount of hashing power NOW from a cloud mining service like cloudhashing.com, it will set you back between $300k and 400k -- but you'll have to negotiate your own deal.

Seriously a massive fail -- one disaster after another with the overhyped launch, followed by chaotic initial mining, followed by two massive DDOS attacks on the two big mining pools.
Then the ypool disaster, where a fork in the network caused a large number of coins to be lost.
What's next? A 51% kill?

Yes, fair point. The Jupiters were only about a week or two late. Totally acceptable given that it performed a lot better than advertised. It was clearly not a BFL-scale fuck up.
I was just wondering whether more was going on here.

Noob question here: Im following the instructions on this article: http://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/2013/12/04/primecoin-cloud-mining-using-digital-ocean-complete-guide/And I get stuck at the command: make -f makefile.unix It tells me: "-bash: make: command not found" All the instructions prior to this worked swimmingly. What should I do? Is there an alternative to "make" to start the compiling ? UPDATE: Problem solved: If "make" is not yet installed, enter the following command: apt-get update && apt-get install make

Some of you may have seen the newsletter that was sent by KNC yesterday, it's also here on their website: https://www.kncminer.com/news/news-75I'm not quite sure what to make of the third item on the list, the "Plan B" temporary hosting. Clearly they have not yet taped out their new chips yet, but is this a "BFL" scale fuck up waiting to happen? Did they overreach? Plan B As you are all aware we broke many world records in releasing the 28nm chip in such a short amount of time. Simple,no mining= NO TRANSACTIONS are confirmed Exactly. Mining is required for the Bitcoin network to function. There is of course the question of will people continue to mine when all they'll get are the transaction fees. We have a while to go until this happens though, so it won't be a problem in any of our lifetimes. Mining will gradually transition to "harvesting" over the next century -- it will never end.

Not sarcasm, just a KNC Jupiter. It generated 1 btc per day when it arrived, now it's down to about 0.4 per day.
The price explosion brought the ROI target in BTC down significantly. It has generated 26.5 BTC by now.

Mining is very profitable and I only got into it 6 weeks ago... what are y'all complaining about?
|
|
|
I thought there were only 1200 available.
There were 1200 in the first batch. I guess 1500 in the second batch. Still, I'm surprised the price went up from $9,995.00 to $12,995.00 for the second batch!

Alright -- my wallet crashing and reindexing the blockchain was a blessing in disguise. It cost me only 12.5 not 14.5 BTC in the end. Order came through... apparently sold out in two days!
|
|
|
It used the same hashes.
Merge mining generally happens at the pool level, so you don't need to worry about doing anything for it if you're with BTC Guild or Bitminter.
Merge mining namecoins adds about 1-2% to the revenue at no extra cost. So it's worth it.
|
|
|
I placed an order and then my fucking bitcoin-qt crashed... argh, need to reindex. Hope it's still there when the computer is done.
It's not a bad deal at 14.5 btc...

Cloudhashing.com is good. At today's BTC price, nearly made ROI on the two year contract in 2 months.
