1  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Upgrading offline usb with Tails OS on: April 13, 2024, 07:55:02 AM
For those who are interested the OS can be updated by this method without any issues.
2  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Upgrading offline usb with Tails OS on: April 12, 2024, 04:30:10 PM
According to Tails official documentation[1], and considering the scenario mentioned by you, you are free to choose if you want to keep your Persistent Storage or if you want to clone the other device Persistent Storage. See please section "4/4 Upgrade your Tails by cloning" of the mentioned URL and you'll see the available options during the upgrade stage:

I had read that documentation from Tails. The doubt came when I talked to some friends and said some things may be changed according to the configuration of the usb with the latest version of Tails.

Thank u!
3  Other / Beginners & Help / Upgrading offline usb with Tails OS on: April 12, 2024, 03:34:38 PM
I know there is a way that you can upgrade an offline usb with Tails by cloning from another usb with the latest version.
My question is: by using this method, would you only upgrade the OS without any other changes in configuration? Would the persistent storage of the offline usb be preserved entirely?

Thx!
4  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Doubt about non air-gapped HW on: November 24, 2023, 07:42:11 PM
1. Everything is done within the device. Your seed phrase and private keys never leave it, not without you authorizing it from the device anyway. Now obviously, not all hardware wallets are equal, and this is why it's a good idea to go with open-source ones.
2. Depends what you want. A multi-coin wallet? a bitcoin-only?

Yes. I mean open source wallets. There are Bitcoin only and multi coin. I know that nothing can be written in the device, but can it be read in any way?
5  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Doubt about non air-gapped HW on: November 24, 2023, 07:33:14 PM
Hi!

I'd like to know something about some HW:

-How safe are these wallets that generate the seed while they are connected to the computer and online?
-Which of these wallets would you recommend?

Thx!

You will be much better off with an open-source, open hardware, airgapped hardware wallet.
I can't believe that nobody is really criticizing this 'old computer' idea. Your 15-16 year old PC will most likely run outdated OS and / or packages, which are much more likely to be exploited than bugs in the CPU.

Hi n0nce

Please, forgive for the question but I'm a bit newbie at this.

Can you name some hardware wallets that are made with both open source software and hardware?
7  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Possible hardware backdoors on: July 20, 2023, 06:44:35 AM
No wallet or OS is completely safe. Any wallet and pc can be compromised. Regarding the hardware backdoors, I totally believe they exist (we're livin g in the age of surveillance) but the question is if the manufacturers want your Bitcoin or something else?

Some may think this: if they can, they will.

To avoid doubts, better use an airgapped old computer or a hardware wallet (made with open source software and hardware) Wink
8  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Possible hardware backdoors on: July 14, 2023, 11:30:33 AM
Hi all!

I've recently seen a video where a hacker holds a conversation about possible hardware backdoors in some pcs and other devices, mainly in the processor but also in more parts. Those backdoors would come with an OS preinstalled that could spy you.

My question is: if that is the case, how secure would be a wallet that you generate in those devices?

Would an electrum wallet that you generate with Tails OS and completely offline be safe?

thx!
If your hardware, for example, CPU is backdoored, then you can do nothing other than to change it with another hardware. By the way, like you, I'm afraid there is a high chance that modern expensive PCs or Laptops may be backdoored, that's why I prefer to use old device for that purpose.
Along with the air-gapped device, you need to take care of the special environment where you plan to store that computer. You need to block radio waves in that area.
Also, everything depends on where you live. If you live in a country and in a neighborhood where people are in their 40s and don't know how to use tech and kids/teens around you are having fun and rarely know a thing about IT and coding and they only use pc for gaming or gambling, then you can feel more secure.

Using old computers can be a good idea (always has been), as you and m2017 said. Nevertheless, I think we should support new open source hardware developments in order to have trustworthy computers in the future.

Thx all for the answers! Wink

You really wan to go down this rabbit hole, checkout just what Intel's Management Engine (ME) and AMD's version of it do https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Management_Engine
It's access to system functions is so pervasive that the NSA required an 'off switch' to disable most of its functions for secure hardware... https://web.archive.org/web/20201201175708/http://blog.ptsecurity.com/2017/08/disabling-intel-me.html?m=1

That's what I was referring to. If that exists (and it seems so), no matter the knowledge you have, or the OS or the encryption you use. They can know what you're doing.

Right now there are devices specifically made for Linux users, focused on privacy. They can be a good option as long as they don't use hardware made by big corporations to make their machines. It would be nice if someone can say that these devices are made using not only free open source software, but open source hardware.
10  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Possible hardware backdoors on: July 11, 2023, 07:44:12 PM
it can be safe then and only then when :
1. No one has access to your hardware
2. hardware is offline.

if it is online...you know..

Online - I mean Blouetooth, WIFI, LAN, 5G, WIDI, and direct connect.

Few years ago I have read about GPS connection- it can be virused too , and their had "connect". at the time it was weird for me. but now, no. Everything is signal, code.

hi

what if the router is on but you are not connected?

thank u!

The tx has been finally confirmed. I use CPFP that was available after the tx appeared again in the receiving wallet.

Thx all for help!
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Wallet for Android / Re: Unconfirmed transaction on Bitcoin Android Wallet on: April 04, 2023, 08:24:24 PM
Hi!

There is an update about the tx. Recently it appeared again in the receiving wallet, but it's still unconfirmed. Does this mean that it can be confirmed in the coming days?

It appeared again after the mempool was purging txs with low sat/vB rate.

If your transaction is rebroadcast it would still be stuck on the mempool because the current network is pretty congested.

Would you mind telling us where the BTC came from? If it was from the exchange the only thing that you can do is to wait for the fee rate to drop on the mempool.
Or your final hope is to do CPFP would you mind to try to make a transaction while its currently unconfirmed go to send page and then make a transaction to send it to your receiving address this time make sure to change the fee to prioritized.

Hi!

Its not from an exchange. It comes from Bitcoin Wallet for Android to another wallet I know.

I made the tx last Friday (March 10th), but it did not transmit until next day. So the tx remains unconfirmed since Saturday (5 days so far).
Thats quite a long time already. I hope you don't try to rebroadcast your transaction now since there's no use in doing so. Let it drop off the network automatically by next week.

Dont know the sats per byte since if I check the tx it doesnt appear on the explorer.
You can see the fee rate of your tx on mempool. Just go to "mempool.space/tx/<your tx id>" and you will get a fee rate column under your transaction. You can also check the average fee rate (in sat/vB) on top of the mempool to get an idea on how much fee is required to get your tx confirmed faster next time Wink

Ok. In mempool says it is 1.2 sat/vb. Also ETA in several hours (or more).

Hope it gets confirmed before 2 weeks Wink

Hi.

I removed the tx from the receiving wallet and disappeared from the list. Coins disappeared too, but they did not appear in the original wallet, although by checking the address on an explorer the coins never moved. I guess I'll have to wait for the network to confirm or reject the tx. Hope it doesnt take long. Wink

I'll get back with an update when some of this happens.

Thank u for helping!
Just as expected, the coins just disappeared from your wallet but it can't be removed from the explorer just by yourself. Btw, can you tell for how long your tx is pending ? An unconfirmed transaction can remain on the mempool for 14days before getting dropped back (meaning sent back to the original sender's wallet). And how much fee size in sats per vByte did you pay? That can give us an idea to help you with the rough estimate.

Hi.

I chose economic fee as I didnt care much about the confirmation time. Dont know the sats per byte since if I check the tx it doesnt appear on the explorer.

Hope this helps Wink

Thx!

Do u know how I can get the tx confirmed?
Now, talking about bitcoin transaction accelerator, there are free tools and paid one. I know viabtc still have free accelerator you can check it here[1] but take note that the transaction fee should be >0.0001 btc. But for your case it's probably below because you will not go here if its the case. The paid one i knew is pushtx.btc.com but they already stop their services way back 2021.
On the other hand, if RBF is not available, your only option is to wait either it drop by the network so the balance will appear again to your wallet OR it got a confirmation after days worst if weeks.

Hi.

I dont know if this matters but the coins were transmitted and I can see them in another wallet, but the tx remains unconfirmed. On the other wallet I have the options to broadcast (that doesnt work) or to remove the tx. If I click on "remove", will the tx be rejected and coins appear again in the original wallet? or just it is removed from the tx list?

Thx for ur answer!

Do u know how I can get the tx confirmed?
I do not advice anyone to use that wallet because it does not have an easy way to backup your seed phrase. You can backup the wallet file, I guess, but the seed phrase backup is never easy.

I will advice you to use Bluewallet or Electrum on your Android. They both support RBF too.

I am not Bitcoin Android wallet user and I do not know if this would work, if it does not work, wait for the people that are using it, to post. On the wallet, you will see the transaction in the transaction history or so, click on it and see if you are able to see where you can pump or increase the fee.

If you are able to get your seed phrase, import it on Electrum to pump the fee. Download Electrum from the official site: https://electrum.org/#home

Hi.

On the transaction options I dont see any where I can raise fee by using RBF.

U said there is a way to back up this wallet with a seed phrase? Where can I see the seed phrase of this wallet?

Thank u!
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Wallet for Android / Re: Unconfirmed transaction on Bitcoin Android Wallet on: March 16, 2023, 09:21:48 AM
Which wallet is that? We have to know the wallet name, so that any of the wallet user on this forum can give you a proper guide on how you can increase the fee.
I guess this the famous bitcoin wallet by schildbach[1] and this should be moved to that board.

And as for i know, the RBF should work only have the balance on your wallet.

Yes. It's that wallet.

Do u know how I can get the tx confirmed?

Thx!
