One scary thing... Short interest has quadrupled in the last day. :/

https://www.tradingview.com/symbols/BTCUSDSHORTS/

Whassat gonna do?

when did shorting start and what exchanges allow this?   I don't short and never will just surprised this became an option in trading BTC.  Hell i guess if you can gamble it away at a dedicated site anything can pop up.

Since hedge funds are in the game now as well, this would suit them. This level of accumulation might get filthy at times.
Just my 2c

ahhh yeh that's right I had forgot about them, they like to claim it brings liquidity to the market however I have always seen it as just manipulation.

I will say this - coming from a person that creates physical items that use private keys I generate - it comes down to trust. Several months ago, I had a partner I thought I could trust. We set up an airgapped system to generate the keys. The keys would be generated on screen, converted to QR code and then printed - the CLI that showed the keys would be closed after each generation. No file was created or generated to save/store the keys. Once printed they were to be applied immediately to the item. He did several for his own customers. I left that as his responsibility and had him generate me almost 2 dozen addresses (1 for myself and the rest for my 8 children and 12 grandchildren) One day, as I sat and drank my coffee - a program I use that has all addresses I use and those of my children/grandchildren loaded as "watch only" addresses started showing all the addresses he generated for me to empty out.

I first thought he took the funds - in the end, it was that he found our system too slow - and he used an online vanitygen to create the keys - well, the owner of said site decided to on that morning drain several thousand accounts of their funds - of which involved all of my children/grandchildren and my business account.

I was fortunate that he had not done any customers of mine.

Needless to say - he is no longer a partner of mine. And I will trust no one to generate keys for me in the future. There is too much to risk both personally, financially and with reputation.

so as was said above, each link in the chain is a chance for the process to break. If you save the files, the HD is a weak link, if you print them there is risk of someone copying/viewing them. If you trust someone else to do it, you have no guarantee that they did not fuck it up.

If you are going to expect us to accept your word on the issue, then you need to - in the very least - be there for all steps of that private key generation, never letting them out of your eyes, not even for a second.

first off .... 12 Grandchildren Wow !

second... hope that loss wasn't to big and thanks for the tips !

Maybe generating addresses the same way the company that made the satori chips is the way which I think was all by machines but yes it comes down to trust again.

I think we were using skype they had a small tablet they took with them. Their phones over there too were way better than what we had over here. MSM messenger use to have the same function long before skype was popular.

The U.S. was behind in cell phone technology for years.  I used to buy my cellphones from Europe that would work on the bands here.   I once bought a Nokia phone that Japanese symbols on the number pad.  Loved that phone and I was literally the only one I knew who had it so that was kinda cool lol.  I remember Europe (and apparently Japan/part of Asia) had cameras/video cameras several years before we got them.

I have seen several Monacoin beer bottles ( cant seem to locate the pics at the moment).

I know this maker.  His website - https://sakamotometal.tk//  He makes quite a few crypto coins.

He recently asked me what other coins I want to see made and I told him Monero and sent him some examples.  Hopefully he'll produce a few.

I saved the Sakamoto link thanks, I bet he knows of 2CH !   Yes it seems Samsung, LG etc use to limit the tech on U.S. destination phones for two years or so. The Japanese girls would send me pictures now and then of what they had and what was coning...  I haven't chatted with them in years but I still get some art work pics on twitter from some of their friends.

12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will energy consumption be Bitcoins downfall ? on: June 05, 2021, 09:51:51 PM
After Elon Musk's tweet about energy consumption, why do many people think that only bitcoin consumes a lot of energy, but if we compare it to industrial factories around the world, bitcoin consumes very little energy because bitcoin mining factories exist in only a few countries, whereas factories industry already exists throughout the country.

People are aware there are more than one mined cryptocurrency just as there is more than one bank competing for consumer business. Now that there are crypto's competition for market share cryptos such as Nano may start capturing a little more of the market. BTC will continue to get the Lions share for many more years as it was the first, is well weathered and has the name.

Just as people moved from gasoline powered cars to electric will investors also move from bitcoin to ecofriendly alts?
I donít really think so. But yes a lot of people donít like that bitcoin consumes a lot of energy, and for sure there are going to be people who are going to leave Bitcoin to go for all those greener altcoins, but that is not the end for Bitcoin. If you have been reading the news or doing research about bitcoin mining, youíre going to know that a lot of mining companies now are starting to move to mining Bitcoin with renewable energy source. I know of a company that 95% of their mining is with renewable energy, and then 5% is from nuclear.

I think at the very least we will start seeing some diversification into established coins using POS as regardless of the sources of energy its vastly less than POW

15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin should be taxed on: June 05, 2021, 10:58:54 AM
The power to tax is the power to destroy.

The power to tax bitcoin means there is the ability (through taxes) to make it unusable and/or unprofitable. That gives them a way to destroy bitcoin without actually out-right banning it.   Angry

actually its not BTC that being taxed in the USA... Its the dollar   You dont pay any taxes on crypto currencies until you sell them for USD.  and then its only "IF" you made a capital gain.  So you are paying taxes on your USD capital gain on ALL cryptocurrencies just like stocks.

18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What effect does a growing number of altcoins have on Bitcoin on: June 04, 2021, 09:38:02 PM
Japan was the first Government I believe to fully adopt the use of a crypto currency as "their own" in MONA.  Its interesting that still today 99% of altcoins will still fall to the effects of BTC price and can not break out on their own trading patterns.
That would be surprising if altcoins were independent projects that were released on this market, but as we know most coins are nothing but bitcoin clones claiming to be better and it is almost impossible that an inferior copy is ever going to surpass the original, so it is not really that surprising that we see a huge correlation among bitcoin and altcoins, and as long as this is the case and altcoin developers do not really make an effort to create something different then we are going to continue to see this behavior playing out in the market.

right, they all just tweak the same tech and made a few changes here and there like Proof of Service with Helium and POS with others. However I believe they all still use a blockchain ledger

Very cool story, thanks for sharing! How did you virtually join them BTW, was it like over via Skype or something like that? (Just curious).  Iíve seen several monacoin coins, but not sure if Iíve seen this exact one. Do you have photos of the others? Would love to see them.

Hereís some stuff Iíve found..

I think we were using skype they had a small tablet they took with them. Their phones over there too were way better than what we had over here. MSM messenger use to have the same function long before skype was popular.  I gave my daughter the Mona coins ( except the one pictured I kept for me)  because she liked cats Smiley  and all about Japanese stuff like me. I think I bought all those coins in the pics you provided... I might have some old pics somewhere but they would be the same type coins.

I also gave away all my satori coins in flips to nieces and nephew just a fun way to get them interested...  seems the challenge coins is the big thing for them lately though Smiley

I looked and I never took pics on the Mona coins just my Cass collection, I did find this Mona Beer pic though.. They bought some of this and a bag of Mona coffee too.

20  Economy / Collectibles / .999 Silver Mona Coins and the Tokyo Virtual Date Story on: June 04, 2021, 05:43:50 PM
Thought this would be a good story for the weekend !

So back when I first started collecting physical crypto coins one that I was very interested in was a Silver Mona coin.  MONA was appealing as it was considered Japans coin and Japan was the only country at the time that was open arms for crypto.  I met a couple of gals on Twitter who lived in Tokyo that were also crypto enthusiast. They only spoke Japanese so we had been using google translator to chat lol. One night they told me they were going to a bar in downtown Tokyo and buy drinks with Mona did I want to come virtually.  Well hell yeh !  Mona was also having an event that weekend.  Well it was fun and I got to see part of downtown Tokyo and the inside of a Japanese bar.. They are much more civilized than an American bar I noticed haha..

I sat at the bar with them virtually while they made their transactions and we all thought it was pretty cool. As it was nearing time for them to leave its a tradition there for the customer to be served a going away cup of coffee. Everyone gets their own poor over coffee contraption and that's their final drink.  It was cooool to me and I bought one pictured below and still use it today. That was a fun night I felt like I took a trip to the other side of the world. They introduced me to a guy (2CH) a few days later that was making the coins. I bought three of the silvers and several other types he had on his japan site. Silvers were very limited. He and I also had to translate everything and surprisingly it all went smooth.

Hope ya liked the story !
