1  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Chrome Browser extension: MtGox trading bot on: May 17, 2013, 09:13:45 AM
It's probably just a temporary MtGox access problem - unfortunately it happens from time to time - MtGox API isn't very stable :/   (you cannot get data from the URL https://data.mtgox.com/api/2/BTCUSD/money/info by loading it directly in the browser, as your API key has to be included in the header)

Right now, MtGox access works for me - have you tried restarting the extension? (or the whole browser)
Yes, over the past three days I restarted Chrome and reloaded the extension several times. I even spun up an EC2 instance just to be sure it wasn't some weird config issue on my computer... but I always got the same message in the bot. I'd read elsewhere that MtGox's API wasn't very stable so at first I assumed that was the problem, but when it persisted after a day I thought I might have set something wrong.

But you must have some Gox Voodoo because now that you've posted, there's no problem Smiley Thanks for replying!

I'm having an issue with TobbeLino's GoxTradingBotTobli. I sent a PM but then read in the previous page that he'd probably be away for a while for parenting duties.

Using the latest files from GitHub, I've created an API Key with the two permissions stated in the readme and I've set the API Key and secret in the bot's configuration. Upon loading Chrome, I receive an error on the bot:
Quote
"Problem accessing MtGox account."

I opened the console and can see this:
Quote
2013-05-16 11:25:50 [background.js:580] Using MtGox API v2
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 503 (OK)

The second line has a URL: https://data.mtgox.com/api/2/BTCUSD/money/info
The URL contains the following text:
Quote
{"result":"error","error":"Identification required to access private API","token":"login_error_missing_rest_key"}

I'm not sure what's required to correct this problem. I've double-checked my API Key, and even created a new API Key/Secret - but the problem persists. Any ideas?

Do we automatically become "Jr. Member" after the criteria is met? The Newbie Readme doesn't specify that we have to post in this thread in addition to wasting 4 hours and making useless posts. I've been logged in for 4 hrs 23 mins and have 15+ posts, yet still don't have access to post outside this subforum.

EDIT:
Right after I made this post my status was changed to "Jr. Member". Is this an automated process from posting in the thread, or was there a ~20 minute delay after I reached 4 hours?
4  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is miningunited.com a SCAM, turning .1 bitcoins into .137 for almost free? on: May 16, 2013, 03:35:43 PM
Fact is I haven't seen one post yet where someone has not gotten paid. (And provided proof that they even sent bitcoins.) Now, Bitpop's account took 10 days. Longer then I would like, but still got it. Was there anyone else? Anything over 10 days?
I sent 0.25 BTC on May 8 and haven't received anything yet; however, my address has the status "Going out..." on MU so it will arrive soon-ish. I expected it to take ~10 days because that's what the website estimates. I don't think anyone really read and comprehended the timeframes.
5  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Butterflylabs Huge SCAM on: May 16, 2013, 03:30:19 PM
mate this has been going on for year.
funds have been AND are being embezzled at the very least WAKE THE **** UP
proof? WHERE HAS EVERYONES MONEY BEEN GOING FOR A YEAR?Huh?
Mate, I don't feel your pain because I wouldn't be silly enough to pay for a product that didn't exist, but I can empathise: in the excitement of BTC a lot of people got caught up in the hype, and it's sad that you (and other people) thought it would be a good idea to put up money for some company to fund their R&D with. You guys bought into vaporware with the dreams of making big dollars mining BTC.

However sad that story might be, it's still not a scam just because you feel betrayed and cheated. Do you have actual evidence that someone at BFL is embezzling company funds? Because embezzlement is illegal, and if you have evidence -- actual evidence, and not just your hyperbolic tantrum ranting -- you should really hand it over to the relevant Government agency... after posting it here, of course.

The post count is easy enough to achieve with pointless one-line responses, but getting past the 4 hour minimum requires wasting time browsing junk.

58 minutes to go...
7  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My Bitcoin calculator: Calculate $ & BTC return based on original BTC investment on: May 16, 2013, 02:36:16 PM
Thanks for checking Nick.
No problem... but I was really hoping you'd managed to trojan it, or snuck in a few lines of malicious code amongst a bunch of legit VBA.

Regarding the sell values inside cells E3:E23
I was mostly joking in an attempt to point out that you'd used a formula to set static value.
8  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Anyone willing to sell this newbie some BTCs? on: May 16, 2013, 02:30:00 PM
and from what I read so far, PayPal "gift" is actually quite secure for the seller and could actually be disadvantageous to the buyer if the seller is a scammer.

"Quite secure" is quite wrong. Even if the payment is sent as a "gift", the buyer can still do the following to defraud the seller:
 - if using a link account, chargeback through their bank
 - if using a linked credit card, chargeback through the card issuer
 - enter a note on the transfer that payment is for virtual goods

If you'd like to sell me 10 BTC for spot, I can demonstrate the above.

Anyone willing to sell me some BTCs to get me started? I would like to pay using PayPal in USD.

You'll have more luck with http://bitcoin-otc.com : create an IRC account, authenticate with a GPG key, use the WoT to select a reputable seller.
Or you could try https://localbitcoins.com .

There are no macros in the workbook. No suspicious activity detected and no suspicious network traffic from the VM, but there's something strange happening in E3:E23.
11  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie here, Hello. on: May 16, 2013, 11:54:12 AM
This is my 10th post. I just want to get out this pointless subforum.

Hello.

Really, it's a closed source application. That's enough of a red flag.
13  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 7990's or 7970's? on: May 16, 2013, 11:48:56 AM
@ OP
"Who's going to be the first to try out a 7990?"
http://www.reddit.com/r/litecoinmining/comments/1d0vwz/whos_going_to_be_the_first_to_try_out_a_7990/c9lyf99

1x 7990 : $1000 - 1200Mhah with OC and Tuning
2x 7970 : $800 - 1400mhash with OC and Tuning

you think you about it...

the calculated ROI on a 7990 is about 6-9 months depending on difficulty at the time.
You need to consider more than just the cost of the cards.

14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is miningunited.com a SCAM, turning .1 bitcoins into .137 for almost free? on: May 16, 2013, 11:43:53 AM
A bit early? No kidding. The lynch mob here has grown with amazing speed, with frankly very little evidence of any actual wrongdoing.

MU is a dubious business but there's no evidence it's a scam or ponzi scheme. It's all speculation until MU shuts down and runs with the money.
15  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Butterflylabs Huge SCAM on: May 16, 2013, 11:37:39 AM
It's not a scam until they've run off with the money. Until then, they're just terrible at business.
16  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mt Gox is lying on: April 12, 2013, 12:53:31 PM
They most certainly are--in comparison to almost any "real" exchange, anyway.
Yeah, except Gox isn't a "real" exchange. Compare apples to apples, please.

Perhaps not, but given the small time-frame within which they have grown from that trading-card company to the largest bitcoin exchange, their current incompetence becomes, if not forgivable, then certainly somewhat understandable.
No. It's not forgivable at all. You're a Gox-apologist and it's really quite sad. The problems Gox is facing aren't new and they weren't unknown, and the solutions to such problems have been implemented before. It's not like Gox was suffering some unique, never-before-experienced technological issues.
You said so yourself:
It wasn't like their problems just magically popped up suddenly without any indications whatsoever.
Gox has failed to implement the necessary preventative measures that would have mitigated this mess. They sat on their arse and raked in the money. They're not just incompetent, they're irresponsible.

You're not really mad at them. You're mad at yourself. Anyone who bothered to do a bit of research and learn a little about their potential to suffer exactly these sorts of growing pains could have seen this coming five miles away.
I don't use Gox. I didn't like Gox before and I don't like them now, but now I'm mad at them because they should have been able to do a better job. Their fuck up has adversely affected the entire economy. If it was isolated to Gox users then I would probably just laugh at them.
17  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Offering PayPal for Bitcoin? You're likely to be labeled a scammer - Read why on: April 12, 2013, 12:10:34 PM
Well, one hurdle for newbies like me who are just getting into the cryptocurrency game; the quickest way to send money (otc on irc) and get BTC is to use paypal.

The exchanges usually takes at least 1-2 business days to get your cash in the accounts.
And if you're in a country that's not the US or in Europe, it's even more difficult, the fees are even higher, and it can take over a week. To buy BTC I could either submit a bunch of private information to the exchange (yeah, that sounds like a good idea) that will take over a week to authenticate AND pay exorbitent international transfer fees ($30 per transfer) that can take up to seven days to transfer, or I could be charged a 25 - 40% premium to buy "locally" in my local currency, or I could build reputation on http://bitcoin-otc.com and use PayPal to buy instantly.

PayPal is a fucking maggot pile, but it's so convenient.
18  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Offering PayPal for Bitcoin? You're likely to be labeled a scammer - Read why on: April 12, 2013, 12:03:35 PM
On that note, though, I would like to buy some BTC using PayPal and would be happy to go through an Escrow with someone [ with a good rating/rep on here ] to participate as the Escrow. I think using PayPal Gift makes it impossible for a chargeback to occur?
I think you're confused. A chargeback is a forcible return of funds to the customer. Since you're the one sending the money as payment for coins, you'd be the one to issue a chargeback. The person selling the coins is the one who has to be cautious.

Also, a chargeback can occur even if the money is sent as "gift". For example, if the funds came from a linked credit card instead of your PayPal balance, the issuing bank can issue a chargeback.

The only places that did were tiny folks
Gox isn't tiny.

that used to trade a virtual currency for cards from a nerd-game.
Their previous business has nothing to do with their current incompetence.

The market grew faster than they were ready
Sure, the alleged 20,000 new users per day would have been a strain, but this could have been handled if they had the foresight to build a scalable system. Instead, they were lazy and cheap. There are other factors to the Gox lag that they are entirely able to mitigate. But again, they're lazy and cheap, and were making a shitton of profit from being that way.

Fuck them.

I registered because I wanted to ask a question to http://spendbitcoins.com - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=40806.0 . I didn't realise I'd have to wait 4 hours and spam the Newbie section with 4 more posts.
