2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin-qt over ssh on: June 29, 2013, 06:09:17 PM

"ssh -NL localhost:6666:your.machine.with.bitcoind.you.want.to.talk.to:8332 your.user@your.machine.with.bitcoind.you.want.to.talk.to"

and then run "bitcoin-qt -rpcport=6666 -rpcuser=whatever.on.your.machine.with.bitcoind.you.want.to.talk.to -rpcpassword=xxx.on.your.machine.with.bitcoind.you.want.to.talk.to"

Again, I haven't tried this (with bitcoin-qt). I have tunnelled with ssh.

That didn't work for me Sad Am I just being thick? I can't see where the port 8332 fits in the chain...

How? Like you show above? That's tunneling, isn't it?
4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin-qt over ssh on: June 25, 2013, 03:01:17 PM
I have cygwin, and have started the X server. But when I run ssh -X user@ubuntu machine, bitcoin-qt says it cannot connect to my X server.

Unless you have an X server running i WINDOWS, it doesn't matter how much forwarding you have.

I missed that cygwin has an X server. Sorry. I haven't looked at cygwin in a long time and at that time I
didn't see any X server.

I've also tried with Xming.

Perhaps I'm not setting DISPLAY properly before running bitcoin-qt? I've tried a number of things and I'm not certain which it should be....

I am trying to run bitcoin-qt from my from ubuntu server onto my windows 7 machine. How do you do that?
You can't use bitcoin-qt as a RPC client.

Oh. so the only way to run it is by being sat on the local machine?

I have cygwin, and have started the X server. But when I run ssh -X user@ubuntu machine, bitcoin-qt says it cannot connect to my X server.

I also have putty, with X11 forwarding enabled. That doesn't work either (same error).

Any help greatly appreciated.....
7  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Which is the best linux distro for bitcoind? on: June 23, 2013, 09:22:57 PM
Same here, just the raspbian wheezy package.  Don't bother though, it runs so slow I don't think it's worth it.  You really need an external HD also.

I use my pi only for mining (not to run bitcoind). It does that just fine....
8  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Which is the best linux distro for bitcoind? on: June 23, 2013, 03:19:18 PM
I've gotten them working on ubuntu and raspbian wheezy, so I'd vote for any Debian.  It's a nice family because there's a lot of users and support.

There's no reason it wouldn't work on CentOS -- what error are you getting?

Sorry - been away a while.

I was running Centos 5. Trust me, it was a bitch trying to get bitcoind compiled and running (and I'm a 20+ year 'nix admin). I'm guilty of not remember the exact problem, but I think the compile was failing on some missing cryptographic library routine that Redhat don't support for a reason I don't quite remember either....

I'm now running bitcoind on Ubuntu 12.04. An absolute breeze compared to Centos 5...

ps. my mining is done via cgminer running on raspbian on a pi....

which raspImage did you use ?

Just a vanilla raspbian....
9  Economy / Services / Uk based hydro electric hosting on: June 22, 2013, 09:35:14 PM
I am in discussions regarding rackspace at a Scottish 35kW hydro electricity resource @ 7-8 pence / kWh. If anyone in the UK is interested in developing some idea for hosting mining rigs there, PM me....

...In America, where they have a constitution to protect them from the government - I think selling on those ideals works a bit better...

You're joking aren't you? It's a mirage:  http://www.ted.com/talks/lawrence_lessig_we_the_people_and_the_republic_we_must_reclaim.html

...which is where Bitcoin comes in...
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Putting a UK group together on: June 22, 2013, 07:12:28 PM
Hi,

What structure did you have in mind for this group?

I am trying to start a charity (Bitcoin association of Great Britain) which would have it's leading object as the advancement of education for organisations who wish to incorporate bitcoin.

There is another thread started concerning this with a video of me talking about it.

I have attended all the most recent London bitcoin meetups (highly recommended) and have had a lot of enthusiasm for this but limited support. Let me know if you are interested in sharing ideas?

My ideas are all on github, search for BitcoinAssociationofGreatBritain or bagb org uk

Lee.

That's a consultancy, not a charity.
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: June 22, 2013, 07:09:28 PM
Where did the info on the units' sizes come from -- do we have a solid idea on what they will be?

Looks like on KnC's site, they list Jupiter at 160 x 160 x 200 (I'm assuming cm), and 4kg weight. For those of us who are metrically-challenged Wink that converts to roughly 5ft x 5ft x 6.5ft, and just under 9 lbs.

And that's just one unit...! I'm hoping that they've managed to scale it down a bit, but I've opted at this point to use their hosting plan (whenever they have more info).

Usually sizes are in mm, not cm!

I agree mm, but poor practice not to label the units...
14  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Jalapeno Raspberry Pi @ 36 Watts - Delicious! on: June 12, 2013, 08:12:55 PM
as a fellow pi user, they are great...
but id drop the peon, arch is a pain, a normal rasp weezy and you can compile cgminer from git source hapily..
also worth looking at :-
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=76502.0

which now runs happy on my pi, with spine polling
Good install doc is available at :-

works fine on fpga's and asics Cheesy

What will cacti do for me?

Great first meeting in Brighton last night!

Same time, same place, next month: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=219326.0
16  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Jalapeno Raspberry Pi @ 36 Watts - Delicious! on: June 12, 2013, 08:58:58 AM
Ah, I misunderstood. Was the point that the original Jalapeno's be powered by the USB hub, being that they are only 3 watts or so? I guess a computer would have no problem with that?

Just 3 watts? Really? That rocks if true...

Good to meet you guys - fascinating, but too short... next time!

strange

Indeed - good first meeting!

10th July, same time same place?
19  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Jalapeno Raspberry Pi @ 36 Watts - Delicious! on: June 11, 2013, 05:10:10 PM
Not if you have externally powered devices.

Thanks Smiley I'll bear that in mind next time. I bought powered because I'd been reading that the pi is much stabler with them.....
20  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Brighton, UK on: June 11, 2013, 04:57:37 PM
I've mentioned it to a few others who may not be frequenting this forum, so lets do it anyway. Would be good to grab a pint :-)

s

Cool, see-you tomorrow! I'll be wearing, er, clothes.

camouflaged shorts, bike shoes and a lightweight green overjacket so I don't get wet.....
