On 26 February 2015, Australian bitcoin company CoinJar officially opened up its debit card CoinJar Swipe to the customers. The system will operate on Australian EFTPOS network, which is supported by all main banks and includes 826,769 payment terminals all over the country.

This looks great, $29 just for the card is a bit expensive but could be worth it in the long run.

This looks great, $29 just for the card is a bit expensive but could be worth it in the long run.

The price will certainly put off many people, at least at first. But they can use it in almost a million terminals, that's huge for a "small" country like OZ.

I will be buying buy one very soon,.despite the price it's still a good way to have access to instant cash if you have BTC but no $. I am in that situation this week.
Better than the setup with cashing on via my Coinjar account now.
I pu in a request almost 4 days ago for about $100 of BTC to be transferes into my linked bank account and it still has not arrived, site says they have a backlog at the present time, just hope i get it before the weekend.

Anyone here work for Coinjar that can explain to me what's up?

Edit: Just got cash into my bank, took 5 days but to there credit they did stay in constant email contact with me and also mentioned that there was a small backlog of withdrawals.
I will use this service again,.they handled everything in a very professional manner.

I ordered the card and there is no cost for the card per se, you just have pre-load $30 AUD before they send it to you, then when it arrives that balance is spendable. At anytime now I can transfer BTC to 'top it up', it is converted at their spot price once they do, so it can be a handy way to take profits when the price of BTC rises.  I've been using coinjar for over a year now and the service has always been professional. Used my Coinjar EFT card for the first time yesterday at Safeway. Worked fine, when I finally remembered the pin.

Overall, I think it's a novel idea but in the back of my mind I feel it's not really helping the long-term prospects of bitcoin. It's basically a gift card which you load up with bitcoin. Once someone figures out a way to make spending bitcoin on the blockchain (not converting back and forth to dollars) as simple as using an EFT card or PayPass/PayWave - the bitcoin ecosystem will be ready to take off.

Not so sure about the conversion and ATM fees and so on. I mean I know they're running a business (and have to insure against slippage) but in my mind I feel bitcoin is meant to be new model where users are not nickel-and-dimed to death. This card is very bank-like, if you know what I mean.

But yeah, I'm giving it a go...
