I'm wondering if Ethercoin is related to the Ethereum project in any way or are the Ethercoin developers trying to take advantage of Ethereum? Thanks!

They have nothing to do with each other. There is a bitsharestalk thread about this topic showing Ethercoin valued at over $30 each last November. Today's price is $ 0.850808
