http://nashvillecitypaper.com/content/city-news/anonymous-group-allegedly-hacked-romney-tax-records-franklin-firm

An anonymous group claims to have gotten access to all of Romney's 1040 tax returns and is threatening to release them by Sept. 28th

They have 2 bitcoin addresses, one in favor of releasing and the other opposed.  Whichever reaches $1,000,000 worth of bitcoins first 'wins'.

If the one opposed to releasing the returns wins, they will never be released.  If the other wins, they will be released immediately.
Now, It's not clear that the tax returns are real, although some places have confirmed receiving them.

I see this being very good for bitcoin prices in the short term.  Even if neither address receives the bitcoins the press alone should draw in some new faces.

What do you guys think?

They probably would have been better going for a more achievable target like $10

It's on the front page of reddit.  Even if nobody takes the tax returns seriously I'm hoping some people will say "Bitcoin? What is that" and look into it

What a waste of money.   What do you think you will learn from him that your don't already know?    He is rich, has a good accountant and has off-shore funds that are basically non-taxable.   SURPRISE SURPRISE, maybe it is just me but I figure if I examined 98% of all federally elected representatives they would show the same story just in different amounts.

oh wait i got a question: how will affect this the future of bitcoins ? because if this dude become president he can easily outlaw bitcoin in US and ban US citizens to use bitcoins (the same way it did with poker so all go to vegas) this is dangerous stuff

Yes, that is also a pertinent question.  Especially if the feds use this as an example of how bitcoin can be used for less than legal activities.

Compared to the ~100,000 needed to complete either, these are both essentially 0. But we still have a few weeks left, so those numbers could go up.

How much of this is from the coded messages sent using the bitcoin amount as binary code?
