Short: yes

and there are thousands of btc clones.

i would stay with the 2 biggest coins: Bitcoin and Litecoin.

Namecoin is another one with an interesting concept but first you should just learn everything about BTC

There are two Bytecoins, one is a Bitcoin clone, the other is an entirely different codebase, elliptical curve, difficulty algorithm, etc

If you mean bytecoin (bcn) than answer is no. It is not a copy of bitcoin. It is based on cryptonote.

Bytecoin (BTE) is a 1:1 Bitcoin clone.

Bytecoin (BCN) is an entirely different cryptocurrency with an entirely different codebase(It's "default" is anonymity/privacy, the opposite of Bitcoin's which is transparency/openness)

"The nature of Bitcoin is such that once version 0.1 was released, the core design was set in stone for the rest of its lifetime" - Satoshi Nakamoto, June 17, 2010

I suggest to visit http://mapofcoins.com. There you can see the history of the most altcoins including their roots.

Here you can see that Bytecoin (BCN) is the root of an own altcoin family. It was developed from scratch.
