With everyone's concerns of a bitcoin fork, why not fork bitcoin right now, make it an altcoin, then all our bitcoins will be worth a few satoshis extra on the forked chain  Cool

Anybody with me?

The Altcoins are rising! Our children and grandchildren will one day look back on this situation and ask, "What was Bitcoin?"  Smiley

OK so that is not how the update will work.  The update won't take effect unless over 90% consensus is reached, at which point the remaining 10% will be forced out.  There will be no alt coin created in the process, and your coins will not double.

Looking at todays BTC rally I doubt that they will be asking that anytime soon.

I have imaged exactly what you are suggesting.  Just because Bitcoin was first, does not mean it will be what is ultimately used in the end.

Best analogy: the web browser wars.

Nice to see some Altcoins getting much deserved attention, but I wouldn't write off Bitcoin just yet...

I do not see it a worthy replacement in the near future.

The coins from Bitcoin XT and bitcoin core are the same and have the same value. When bitcoin XT is launched, the coins from bitcoin core will be moved to bitcoin XT. Even the 10% of ppl don't agree the forked chain. They can sell out their bitcoin before the upgrade otherwise their bitcoin will be worthless!

What I am saying is that we intentionally model the worst case scenario, mine a shorter chain, allow all btc to stay as btc but allow people to also add their private keys to the shorter chain, the altcoin would be all doublespends from the Main BTC chain, so we could see if they will retain some minor amount of value.  Free satoshis.
