What are Altcoins and how much are they worth in USD and in Bitcoins?
Altcoins are usually (but not always) clones from the open source bitcoin. Usually, the name, ports, nodes, algorithms are used (a lot of times, even improved)

What are Altcoins and how much are they worth in USD and in Bitcoins?
altcoins are alternative coins (cryptocurrencies) that are created everyday. everyone can create a new coin. usually they are just useless and have nothing new but there are some altcoins that have dedicated developers and sometimes have good features. you can check their price at any altcoin exchanger or websites like coinmarketcap (i like this one) that has some information about the coin in addition to its price. altcoin prices in USD and in Bitcoin at coinmarketcap.com

Nice to see new people coming into the community, firstly welcome. Altcoins are basically new technologies in the same vein as Bitcoin so basically competitive currencies in similar technological value, many have different features and have advantages and disadvantages to Bitcoin. You can check ratings here: https://www.coingecko.com/enYou can trade alternative currencies here: https://bittrex.com or https://poloniex.com

Altcoins are the future of digital currency as we know it. Many will perish but a few will span the globe.

There is a list of 645 altcoins and their prices at this link. http://coinmarketcap.com/all/views/all/Everything on it excluding bitcoin is an altcoin. The default prices are in USD and if you want them in bitcoin then click the USD drop down and select bitcoin from the list. There are more altcoins besides those on the coinmarketcap.com page but they are unlikely to be traded on exchanges.

I foresee a day when the word "altcoin" is obsolete.
Instead, the term will be something like "a token of value on a blockchain", the shorter expression being "cryptocoin" or just "coin".

I might be wrong but... isn't there ten thousand threads about this already?

i believe that this can happen too. someday altcoin will simply be called something like cryptocurrency and not just alternatives. but we are far from that day, and there is no coin yet that have that potential to reach that stage IMO. all the altcoin market is just pump and dumps, this is why altcoins are often refered to as shitcoin.

There is no real "altcoins", just coins or cryptocurrency.
I think for segregation of forum categories, the term altcoin was chosen because Bitcoin itself had a large forum.
That's the only reason I see how the term was made.
Some are just coins (by themselves), others have things like markets and additional feature sets that show promise for better technologies.

i believe that this can happen too. someday altcoin will simply be called something like cryptocurrency and not just alternatives. The word "currency" should fly out of window too. It carries too much historical baggage since it has been always associated with nation-state money. Token and Coin are fine. What they denote is of secondary importance anyway, as it is the underlying blockchain tech that matters the most.
