Per WPIX: “The amoeba moves to the brain along a nerve in the patient’s nose then wiggles through a bony plate in the skull called the cribiform plate. From there, it has access to the patient’s brain, which it begins to destroy.”

Once symptoms of the infection begin to appear, patients typically die within about five days.

One reason I don't swim in lakes..

This is retarded beyond belief. Read this:

Infections by Naegleria fowleri are extremely rare. According to WPIX, only 133 cases have been reported in the U.S. over the past 53 years.

Just because there is a one in quadrillion chance that you might get infected by Naegleria fowleri, you will avoid swimming in lakes? It is like saying that no one should travel on railways, since there is a one in a billion chance that you might get killed as a result of an accident.

Well I think he meant thats one of the reasons why he don't like swim in lakes, not only that one. Every person have different perception, and its not wrong if he just want to swim in swimming pool.

In that case, you should also know that Naegleria fowleri is quite common in poorly maintained or minimally chlorinated swimming pools. During the past 40-years or so, more people in the United States have been infected with Naegleria fowleri from the swimming pools than those who were infected from open rivers and lakes.

Wow thanks bryan, you are the best, always provide me new facts. Hey koshgel, I think you need to stop swimming then, no place that safe for you to swim. This amoeba will infect you in that place.

Reminds me of an article I read the other day. This happens a lot more often than you would think.

Last one I read a tiny microscopic creature ate away at her eye. Doctors had to keep her awake for ten days so she could put her eyedrops in every couple of minutes. She survived but has a permanently damaged eye.

The insect got in her eye when she splashed her face with tap water.

Horrific.

So, is it insect or amoeba? Is there any other species that can do that? If you can provide the article to us, that would be great. Then beside ISIS and terrorist threats, we also have to keep ourselves from microorganism attack too  Roll Eyes

Here is a similar incident, but it happened in Taiwan and not in the United States. One thing I notice about these incidents is that most of the time it is the carelessness of the victim which has caused it in the first place. I really feel bad for the girl, as it is extremely hard to live without vision. But she should have been more careful.

That's a terrible thing, a little careless can make big effect. She is only 23 years old and has suffered like that. Fortunately, she only lost her vision in left eye, not both eyes. Hygiene is a serious thing, and we can't underestimate a little creature like amoeba or virus anymore.
