mining with kvm (virtualisation)

How do I set up and run a stock kvm image (ubuntu running the metal and running in kvm too) to control the gpu, making mining from a virtual machine a possibility? Is anybody doing this?

edit: the gpu in this case is a 5850

That's not going to work unless your hardware supports PCI passthrough. Most likely it doesn't, unless you specifically shopped for that feature.
