I've just hopped on the wagon and complete utter nugget, I and have mid gaming level rig which I'm running just now and can compute approx 180-190 Mhash/s on a Radeon 6770 under Win7 x64.  I've yet to boot into backtrack for a tryout.

should i give up and wait for now until ASICs release and stop wasting energy!

Just mine ltc and convert into btc, a lot more profitable for your current rig.

You can mine about 0.03 BTC/day at 190 Mh/s (according to 50btc's pps calculator)
Radeon 6770 uses about 100 watts
Assuming the rig uses 150 watts total and an electric cost of $0.10/kwh, you'd use about $10.80/month in electricity
0.03 BTC/day * 30 days per month = 0.9 BTC/month
At current exchange rate, 0.9 BTC = $12.08
Estimated monthly profit = $1.28

I guess you basically get some free heat if you decide to mine, haha
