I hate to be debbie downer here, but GPU mining is just about done for.  If you pay anywhere near ten cents per kWh or more, you are losing money with each hash.

i.e, There are no pros and cons, because there's just no sense to buying GPUs for mining at this late stage of the game.

Define "cheap" how much do you plan on spending?

It really all comes down to how much one pays per KWh and for the hardware. As for mining bitcoin with GPUs it is getting less profitable each day we get closer to the release of ASIC and of course the reward halving, but one can always point there GPUs to mine litecoin when it gets too bad profit wise.

Isn't this the computer hardware selling forum? Go ask in the mining section for more responses, but the above posters have all been correct. GPUs are just about dead, FPGA will soon be crushed, and it'll all go to ASIC. If anything, you should consider the following:

1) Preorder ASIC
2) Buy FPGA from another user and plan to upgrade to ASIC when they come out

1) Preorder ASIC risk losing if they do not and its in the 10s of thousands now so the question is if they hold up to the deal will it even be worth  it with over 15k people or so with new ascisers will push levels up n up making people buy more and more and costing more ohwell think end game is here

Presuming you are mining for the purpose of profit, then that's what's wrong with it.   There is none (unless, just like with Bitcoin mining, you pay well below average electric rates.)

At the current LTC/USD exchange rate of about $0.07, that means that the 28K LTC mined each day all together produce less than $2K USD per day.

From another thread:

a bunch will switch to ltc (litecoin) mining

Every time I see that assertion I think of this:

With Bitcoin about $80K USD worth of bitcoins are distributed to the hashing provided by miners.   With Litecoin that is about $2K USD worth of LTC issuance.

Since each addtional GPU becomes essentially another mouth to feed it lowers the revenue for the other miners.  The reason the GPUs will be arriving is because they could no longer mine bitcoin profitably.  They won't stick with mining LTC unless it too can be done so profitably.

i.e., it soon will be time to power down your GPU rigs.

I think most people who are going to jump to LTC will do so hoping the price will increase. But then I wonder, if they're expecting the price to increase just to the point it's profitable, why is the price not going up today, when you can buy them for cheap? My only conclusion: nobody cares.
