I get the above message when I start Armory on my laptop at home.  It goes on for days and days.  99% initializing bitcoin engine.  Here's the tricky part:  when I take my laptop to my buddy's house 4 miles away, Armory starts up just fine and works great.  When I bring my laptop home again, Armory NEVER starts ... just "initializing bitcoin engine 99%" for days.  My internet connection is fine (I'm posting this message ... duh).  Any ideas Huh

If you have confirmed that it never works at home, and always works with your buddy, it must be your router/firewall at home... Maybe that would be a first place to start checking?
btw, it's possible your internet (over port 80/443) works fine, but other ports are blocked.

Try to check your ports and ping armory (I don't think this will help).
I have never faced this problem (using this over 2 years)
