How can I transfer the old wallets to my new wallet? The old multibit wallets don't seem to update or sync very well.

Have you tried importing the master private key from your old wallet into the new HD wallet?

Multibit classic has no master private keys, its not a deterministic wallet.

The safest way is to just transfer all your coins to the new wallet. There is a step by step by the devs -> https://multibit.org/en/help/hd0.1/how-to-upgrade-from-classic.html

Im not really here, its just your imagination.

in my experience whenever you want to switch to another wallet it is a good idea to keep a backup from the old wallet, and before doing anything else just try the new wallet out before transferring your coins to the new version.

It depends which old wallet you are are using and the new wallet is compatible with old wallet or not.
Also keep the backup of your old wallet so that you don't lose your coins.
Hope its helps.
