It is worse off if you fork. Pretty obvious why it was even offered...devs were invested. If ETH forks no one will trust it since contracts are just reversed. The real world does not offer do-overs. Forking for a third party is just sad...

You mean DAO holders want to destroy Ethereum by reversing transactions to blacklist 1 "bad" contract?  Since it's a turing complete chain, that means it's inevitable there will be millions of bad contracts.  Why would you reverse the chain for only one of them?  Because the Ethereum developers themselves invested in it and are now using crony capitalism to try and extort people into doing something to line their pockets?

Damage has been done either way but 5 years is an overstatement. Ethereum hasn't even been around that long.

It is worse off if you fork. Pretty obvious why it was even offered...devs were invested. If ETH forks no one will trust it since contracts are just reversed. The real world does not offer do-overs. Forking for a third party is just sad...

Yep, totally agree!

I bought a lot of DAO tokens with 40% discount to ETH price after ETH devs announced hardfork

So, I will get 60%+ profit in ETH when they actually make it.

I don't give a shit about ETH/DAO technology, but I have some experience in speculating distressed assets on stock exchanges

Haha...I hope you do well then. If ETH forks it deserves to die. VB controls it anyways...not healthy.

It's more healthy than Bitcoin's Mt.Gox anyway  Smiley

Not to sound ignorant in the slightest, but essentially you are giving two choices.

1. Fork Eth to allow a certain group of "investors" to recoup their losses.

2. Do not fork Eth to allow the sanctity of crypto currencies to continue to be fungible, decentralized, and not attract further regulations.

In all honesty OP, can you explain to me why forking is a good idea?

ETH fork because of the DAO issue? Then where is the limit? Will ETH fork again if by mistake I send some ETH to the wrong address?
Forking is definitely not the right option.

When the DAO was announced...
It would have taken about 5 minutes for an Adult to grasp the almost laughable conflicts of interest...
But anyone pointing this out was shouted down by "the wise crowd" desperate to make riskless $$$...
(Since Setephan Tual had fraudulently promised that people could pull out their investment at par anytime).

https://etherscan.io/token/thedao-token-chart

The Top 5 accounts hold 20% = quorum to vote in any Proposal...
While the Top 50 accounts hold about 52% of the tokens...
And these are not random people, but Founders and their inner circles...
So Mt DAO was rigged to make the 22,900 investors comprising "the wise crowd" completely irrelevant from Day One.

The DAO token ownership chart pretty much tells you what will happen next.

Since Ethereum holdings likely mirror DAO holdings to a large degree...
Whatever soft/hard fork that is necessary to bail out the Founders will come to pass...
Similar to the dynamic that forced Washington to bail out Wall Street and banks in 2008.

Even though i had invested quite a lot in DAO and ETH, i dont think forking either hard or soft will be good for the community. Its been really good so far and things should've been well tested before even releasing it to public. Getting into a legal battle will be the last thing we want and i cant even imagine government trying to control it.. Just a total mess imo.

Agreed, I really don't think this is the best way to go, where will it end if we do this? kind of defeats the whole point of where we are.
