PCI to PCI-E problem

As mentioned in this thread i have an old fujitsu siemens server with 2 xeon cpu's (the old ones based on P4) and a bunch of PCI-X slots...

In an attempt to utilize the hardware i bought a PCI to PCI-E adaptor:



This worked, somewhat... It's almost as if there's not enough bandwith to show a regular desktop! plus it looks like this: (notice the horisontal lines)



I've tried running a 1x cable between with the whitepixel pci-e 1x trick: thinking it might have been the gfx trying to run 16x but it didn't help...

So what exactly could be wrong? I don't think it's the power as the Asus reference 5850 is running on it's own 300w powersupply and the server is running on a 500w powersupply and i've also checked that the card works fine by putting it in my regular desktop...

Is a pci to pci-e adaptor simply too slow to run a gfx on?

Its probably not a matter of speed, one PCI slot should have enough speed to supply at least 1 lane of PCI-e bandwidth. In my opinion its either an incompatibility with the motherboard, or the PCI slot cannot supply enough power, since even PCIe X1 slots are designed to be able to supply up to 70w of power (I think).

I just thought the reason for the slowdown might have been the adaptors fault considering it's just a cheap no name brand and thus the signal processing might have been too slow or something...

Anyway I guess i'll have to try out the adaptor in my dekstop and see if that gives me the same result

As it turns out the adaptor works just fine in my dekstop (at least after having changed multiply cables and bios settigns around because of an onboard pci-sata chip) so i guess it's either the 300W powersupply or the servers motherboard that actually can't handle the card...

I'll play around with the bios settings of the server and another powersupply... thanks for the help tough
