A Brazilian judge has ordered wireless phone carriers to block access to Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp for 72 hours throughout Latin America’s largest country on Monday, the second such move against the popular messaging application in five months.

The decision by the judge in the north-eastern state of Sergipe applies to the five main wireless operators in Brazil and affects WhatsApp’s more than 100 million users in the country. The reason for the order is not known due to legal secrecy in an ongoing case in the Sergipe state court.

In a statement, WhatsApp said the company was “disappointed at the decision” after doing the utmost to cooperate with Brazilian tribunals.

The decision “punishes more than 100 million users who depend upon us to communicate themselves, run their business and more, just to force us to hand over information that we don’t have”, the statement said, without elaborating.

The low oil prices are causing trouble all over the world. Recently, the Socialists lost power in Venezuela as a result of low oil prices. Situation is looking tense in other oil producing countries such as Saudi Arabia, Libya, Azerbaijan, and Angola. Dilma Rouseff (who happens to be a Socialist) might be the latest casualty of the crude oil price slump.

Sounds like they do not want people to organize quickly when it comes time to riot. I know the States put something similar into law where they can kill mobiles in a set range or was that Britian! One of them if not both can shut it down when needed.

Might be worried about potential issues as we get closer to the Olympics.

WhatsApp block in Brazil overturned after court appeal and user complaints

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/may/03/brazil-whatsapp-block-ruling-overturned

<< A Brazilian judge has overturned a suspension of Facebook Inc's WhatsApp messaging application that affected some 100 million users, after many people voiced frustration at the second such freeze in five months in the South American country.

On Monday, a judge in the north-eastern state of Sergipe had ordered Brazil's five main wireless operators to block access to WhatsApp for 72 hours. The reason for the order was not made public due to legal secrecy in an ongoing case before the state court. However, a different judge from the state tribunal intervened on Tuesday to cancel the ruling following an appeal from WhatsApp's lawyers, the court said in a statement. >>

Its a very obvious connection since Brazils economy has gone tits up since oil prices dropped.
They have what is referred to as heavy oil, meaning it costs more to refine it and therefore more expensive to take out of the ground. So with the price so low they can not afford to produce it and therefore bleeding money and becoming a debt ridden Country.
The connection should be evident to any one that follows the Political scene as we move towards the Olympics and their leader being kicked out,the control must be ready in case things light up and the people start taking it to the streets.
In the future its better to google than spam up a thread.

Hahaha..You sound jaded by the system, but its a very true statement. The system is set in such a way that it corrupts no matter how full of steam you come in,it eventually beats down the best and everyone submits.
I always think of what a guy said in book about torture and getting people to confess or give up information,it was always just a matter of when and not if they confess. So I take that to heart and apply it to politics.

Brazil is in economic recession because of low oil prices. Since the government revenues have plummeted as a result of the low crude prices, there is widespread unemployment and rising inflation. This is the reason why the ordinary Brazilians are rioting in the streets. And the ban on whatsapp was implemented in order to quell the rioting.
