It depends what you want to accomplish. If you want to start mining just to see what it's all about and understand the process, I would suggest getting your hands on some gekko mining sticks or other usb asics. You won't be producing much (I have 5 Gekkos hashing away on my desk at work making ~50Gh/s) like that but it will help you understand the process.

If you're looking to make a profit you have to get dedicated hashing ASICs (avalon 6, Anminer s7 {antminer s9 hasn't started shipping yet}) which can be expensive and cost a bit to run since they eat up power.

Got friends and family bugging you to explain Bitcoin? Point them to https://bitcoinfaq.info for some answers. I've built the site to have simple answers to complete newcomers and info on what is involved in getting started with mining.

I'm openly taking questions and updating the site with answers and walk-throughs.

Day's of mining with a regular PC are pretty much over.   Most PC's are not worth mining.   You might be able to mine a altcoin like Ether depending on what your video card is.  It takes a decent video card though.  So for some this is a possibility some including myself have even bult PC's just to mine  Ether.

But as far as mining BTC it needs to be done with an ASIC.  There is no chance of mining pure BTC on a pc anymore.  CPU/GPU just cannot compete with asics on power.

https://enshop.bitmain.com/product.htm to purchase the most efficient miners on the planet. For a noobie I would 100% recommend the "ANTMINER S7-LN with power supply" because it comes with everything you need (except some little power cord for the PSU) and is very cheap, good efficiency and also very silent. That PSU alone is worth $180... They also run THE ONLY legitimate cloud mining service as well, which is my personal favorite, https://www.hashnest.com/

I will never pay $180 for that piece of crap PSU. For that amount of money, you can buy a nice EVGA 1300W PSU. Again, the PSU on the Antminer S7-LN is a craptastic piece of garbage, you would do well to replace it right when you get it. In fact, you should just buy a regular S7, take out a blade and sell it, you will get much better value.

Do be carefull, the S9 is hitting the market. It delivers roughly four times the hashrate of the S7 with about the same power draw... You might want to wait before purchasing an S7.

Eh it's more like 2.7x the hashrate but yes they're more efficient by a large margin. Very expensive though, even the regular s7 is expensive for a beginner. Which also brings us to a great point about bitcoin mining, the difficulty. This is a good topic to study before getting into mining as this will decrease your profit by 3-7% a month at least.

What is behind your hate for Bitmain?  I am just curious you seem to be anti anything Bitmain.  Making it sound like a item that is burning down houses on S7 (when I have not seen that yet):
S9 had been released and will ship on June 12th, in 4 days. Trouble is it's crappy, why everyone thinks it's mother's milk, I don't know. Bitmain hasn't released anything of quality and value since S3. Their S5 and S7 have sold well but that doesn't mean jack shit. Oftentimes, their gear goes up in flames if you look at it funny. China-built, China-quality. I hope you buy them and your house goes up in flames. Don't blame me, I told you so.

To just bashing a good psu.  I have used these Bitmain APW3 and have had good luck with them.  They are not for everyone with the need of 205V + and noise.  But for me personally I have had no issues.  And running them through winter and summer at this point.   Have you used a APW3 for any amount of time?
