The Israeli military authorities on Monday allowed building supplies to start flowing into Gaza again, lifting a suspension that had blocked work for more than a month on thousands of houses destroyed in the 2014 summer war.

Israel had suspended deliveries on April 4 after accusing Emad al-Baz, an official in Gaza’s economic ministry, of diverting the supplies away from the work they were earmarked for: rebuilding private citizens’ homes. Other projects, like those overseen by the United Nations, were not affected by the suspension.

About 90 truckloads of cement were expected to cross into Gaza on Monday, according to the office of the special coordinator for the peace process. That is around the average amount that had entered daily before the suspension, according to figures provided by the office.

The suspension halted work on 5,095 houses and apartments, out of about 17,800 that were made uninhabitable during the war, which killed more than 2,100 Palestinians and 70 Israelis.

About 4,065 damaged or destroyed homes have been rebuilt, according to United Nations figures.

The plodding pace of reconstruction for the most severely damaged houses has become a pressing matter for Palestinians. Many of the poorest displaced families languish in trailers and shacks, waiting to rebuild, and thousands of others are crammed into rental apartments.

Googled up Gaza. Here is what I got:

Area: 36,500 hectares
Population: 1,850,000
Population density: 50.68 people per hectare
Fertility rate: 4.2 children per woman

At this rate, the population might increase to 5 million by 2050. Where the hell all these people are going to live? Imagine 125 people cramped together in a single hectare of land.

this happen because Israel occupied their original land and they threw them out of it. So it is not their problem that they live in a small area. it is the place that Israel left for them

Still, I don't think that a birth rate of 4.2 children per woman is sustainable in the long term. The world is already overpopulated, and it is not advisable to encourage uncontrolled population explosion. Also, it must be noted that the Gaza Strip is a semi-desert area, which is not suitable for intensive agriculture. They need to control their population growth.

Does this stem from the deal they struck over making sure the Syrians did not over run Israel and where sent to Turkey instead? Recall reading Lebanon sent fighters to patrol the border to make sure in exchange for opening up the Gaza flood gates. Read it some where, might have been the economist.

I believe the reason of these high birth rates is because there is no family without people get killed in the recent war. So they may think that having more kids will be good because you may lose one of them someday because of a missile of a bullet

May be true. How long they (i.e the Jews and the Arabs) are going to fight against each other? Families are getting destroyed and innocent people are being killed. Thousands of children are being made orphans. There can be only one viable solution to this. An independent Palestine for all the Arabs, and a sovereign Israel for all the Jews.

Over-population is a serious issue in the Middle East. In my opinion, many of the conflicts ongoing in the region right now are caused by over population. The arable area is quite small, as most of the region is arid semi-desert. As the population increases, various ethnic groups will fight each other for what is left of the natural resources.
