I have been using antpool since I have started mining but I have heard good things about bitminter and I am thinking about switching for a while to compare the two. Can anyone tell me off hand why this is a bad idea or if anyone has already done this and can tell me what's going to happen? I have done the googling and can't find any direct comparisons of bitminter vs antpool. Thanks.

Well

bitminter is honest pool I used them for years.

antpool is very big and practices tactics I do not like.

but with bitminter you will wait a long time for a block  they only have 2.7ph

antpool has 327 ph

so you would get a bigger share   about 110 times bigger with bitminter

just not very often

you should mine an ckpool (kano.is). They have the highest overall luck: http://organofcorti.blogspot.de/2016/06/june-12th-2016-mining-pool-statistics.html

What kinds of questionable tactics could a mining pool use?

Mine at Jonny's Pool

They use a process called SPV mining in which they do not verify transactions in a block.  They send out an empty block template to their miners, and as a result, they have the highest portion of empty blocks on the chain.  SPV mining can, and has in the past, cause a fork in the blockchain.  If they were verifying things, they wouldn't run into this problem.

In addition to this, they refuse to comply with software licensing and produce absolute crap forked versions of cgminer to power their hardware.

Oh, they also claim to support p2pool, which they absolutely do not.

Jonny's Pool - Mine with us and help us grow!  Support a pool that supports Bitcoin, not a hardware manufacturer's pockets!  No SPV cheats.  No empty blocks.
