A Dutch woman who told Qatari police she had been drugged and raped in March has been in government detention ever since on unclear charges, a lawyer said on Saturday. The Dutch Embassy in Qatar confirmed the woman remained held ahead of a scheduled hearing Monday in Doha, which will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The case highlights the clash between Western law and the the Islamic-based legal codes governing Qatar and other Gulf nations as they try to draw in tourists expecting the protection of Western-style laws. The 22-year-old woman, on a vacation with a friend, went out for drinks at a hotel bar in the Qatari capital on March 15, lawyer Brian Lokollo said. While there, she believes someone "messed with her drink" and her memory became hazy, Lokollo said. She later awoke alone, her clothes torn and the victim of a rape, he said.

I don't know why these Western women want to work in Muslim nations such as Qatar. The women are always treated as sex objects there. If someone rapes you, then it is your fault. If the rapist is an Arab, then never expect justice from the authorities. I just hope that the Qataris will spare her from stoning to death (mandatory sentence for adultery in Qatar).

She shouldn't go there in the first place, not without a male companion anyway. I hope she will be released from the jail soon, will go to her sweet Dutch home and will never visit again such a country.

Yeah... she was given a one-year suspended sentence and will be deported to the Netherlands in the next few days. She was also fined 3,000 Qatari Riyals (equivalent to $823) for indulging in "fornification". Meanwhile, the news is that the perpetrator (an Arab named Omar Abdullah al-Hasan) has also avoided the jail term. He will be deported to Syria.

Sounds a little brutal but sometimes i think such punishment for sex predators (rapist) wouldnt be that bad.

They are going to host the FIFA world cup in 2022. And talking about the girl, She is just 22-years old, and might have thought that she might be able to save some money and get some good work experience. Getting a decent job can be quite tough in the EU.

She traveled with a prostitute to Quatar, she also didn't tell her parrents where she was going.

I'm not saying this is true but what if she went there to "make some extra money" (off of rich Arab people) and the guy decided not to pay. Maybe she decided to fuck him over by making a rape acquisition and got herself fucked over instead.

She said she woke up the next morning in a strange apartment with hazy memories of leaving in a taxi with an Arab man. She believes that her drink was spiked and that she was raped, according to the family’s lawyer, Brian Lokollo.

Most people who go to foreign places do very little background on the country laws or how they handle things..

So basically expecting some sort of same treatment set of laws is a bit naive on her part.

This nations you are talking about are bankrupt in less then 5 years with less then 50$ per barrel.
Would be easy to just bleed them out in less then 2 years with embargos.

Seems unlawful, inappropriate, sad but true, that is there law in Middle East countries.  If you are raped, it is your fault because you let yourself be raped.  Some victims were even slashed like a hundred times.  They even raped men who do not have a beard.    Not a good place for women.

Qatar owns half of Sainsburys, the UK supermarket chain. I no longer shop there as a result of discovering this.
