How to make mining pool? (project)

Hi, just thinking about setting up mining pool for me and few friends.

Its more to learn things and have fun setting it up.

Question, do the server have to be very fast top spec?

At the moment I got server that I dont pay for it its 12x CPU + 8GB RAM + 180GB HDD - would that do for the start?
