Don't mean to be pessimistic, but I think it will get worse.
The new age of technology has made terrorist acts very likely to be filmed on mobile phones/cameras and instantly uploaded and shared between millions on the internet (or even streamed live).
IMO this has two main downsides:
Firstly it helps the terrorists by broadcasting their actions instantly, and globally, making them think they are doing a more effective job (maybe it makes them feel like better "martyrs"), and also makes others more likely to engage in terrorist acts.
Secondly it turns public opinion against the religions that these terrorists
claim to follow, and against their races (which at the moment tend to be Middle-Eastern or North African). This causes an uprising in public support for far-right wing parties/government in Western countries, and hatred and animosity to these religions and races in general.
These two aspects of new technology cause a
feedback loop that just seems to make the problem worse.
If only these fucking lunatics would stop this shit maybe we could all just get along??
The impact of technology doesn't end on smartphones. The combined technological advances allow one person to produce much more damage on average with each passing decade. The
Deus Ex series of videogames, despite being a work of fiction, makes a good job of picturing a society in a downward spiral, where good-intentioned technological advances enable ever more terrifying acts of terrorism.
