The state of Florida has an interesting relationship with Bitcoin. The sunshine state has seen many legal cases on the subject — most notably the recent Michell Espinoza trial. Amid the proceedings, lawmakers in Florida are preparing to draft legislation that may finally recognize Bitcoin as a currency.

"...with an emphasis on consumer protections.”

Not really understanding why we need such a thing, unless they are some how going after wallets or off shoot businesses related to bitcoin.

Amazes me how a lot of these articles talk to people wanting to regulate bitcoin but they all lack understanding of even the basics of bitcoin. If they gave it a honest look, rather than rushing to stifle and tax they would get a decent footing.

Exactly. Bitcoin needs no special legislation, because there's nothing to regulate. Bitcoin is money. There's nothing special about it when it comes to usage in the marketplace. And luckily it's in a decentralized form, so that red tape strategies are not to much avail.

Of course the gov officialdom is trying to find an excuse to put Bitcoin regulation (read: restriction) forward. Bitcoin is free, decentralized money outside of their policy control. And (financial) freedom is the worst enemy of any government. They will frame their laws as measures for consumer protection while in fact these laws are desperate attempts of maintaining the power of the establishment. ultimately they all will fail.

I wonder if the FL governor would sign any bill sent to his desk?  I have heard both sides argue their perspective.  One thing is for certain, some recent court rulings in the States have now allowed for a Gov sanctioned custodian (actually more than one now) to offer IRA's for bitcoin.  Notwithstanding whether or not that is a safe investment, at least its progress towards general audience with the public.  OMG if one of those BTC IRA custodians get hacked it will set us back over here by years and years with the public!!  Even if they are insured the turmoil politically from such a hack would be terrible (using a polite word instead of the one I was thinking).

Two hours ago I was reading thread about Italy, and how they think to legalize and tax bitcoins. Now about Florida, what is happening? Slowly countries starting to accept bitcoins as real currency?
After price increase this year, after steam accepted bitcoin as payment method, and now this talking about legalization of bitcoin in some countries, 2016 will be the year of bitcoin like some people say.
And now its September, until the end of the year many months need to pass, many more great things can happen. My friends I think this is awesome news.
