Someone with a lot of coins can buy and sell coins to themselves in any amount with no loss, right? Does that make it simple to manipulate prices?
Only volume.  In order to move the price you have to go past others' orders.

At times of thin trading Mtgox has most certainly been manipulated.  Anyone looking at the order history can see that.

Hopefully we'll build enough volume and market cap to make manipulation harder.  Right now though, ya gotta be able to spot it when it's happening and not fall prey to it.
