Bitcoin is built by geeks, for geeks.
An easy to use GUI is all people really care about and why this niche will not see serious adoption for some time.
Reference client sucks. No soccermom cares about contributing a full node, they care about ease of use.
If we want a distributed network some devs are going to need to incentivise it with a sexy full client.

Or we will end up centralizing huge numbers around webwallets like blockchain.info who understand that to be the new paypal, you need to be easy and intuitive to switch to.
