Hello!
I want to have a poll here, about idea of storing data on blockchain.
Would you think it's a good idea?
Of course to avoid bloated blockchain, files would have to be small (max 500KB).
I think it's an interesting idea, to have uncensorshipped and always on, always running network of useful files for humanity like: ancient works, arts, manuscripts, research papers, innovations etc.
Also with some compression it could even store some pictures of eg. arts.
Everything would be economically viable not to spam network, and have it always running. So it could be quite expensive, to store some files there, but it would make it special -
that it couldn't be turned off, under any circumstances.

It could be provided to store, the most precious files, which are due to be destroyed in the world.
Uploading would be quite easy, using some client to do it, or even service.

In my opinion, it's only viable for very small files, e.g. compressed plain text descriptions of inventions, or property records.

For images that are more than simple vector drawings (compressed SVG files), I don't support this option. To get a real scientific value, for example, images of works of art would have to be uploaded in high resolution and with lossless compression, and then we would have megabyte-large files and a very bloated blockchain. The extreme redundancy of a blockchain simply isn't efficient for that purpose.

I do. I really wanna see somekind of alternative to clouds in crypto businesses. Siacoin is really great option already. But I guess your suggestion is bit different, isn't it? Uploading right into blockchain must be hard.

In the future also very large  files will have a place on the blockchain. Perhaps in 10-20 years at the most.

Assuming wallets would need to sync the full blockchain, I don't think this would be very practical. Besides the amount of time it takes to sync the chain, the disk space requirements would be much higher than if the storage was on a side-chain.

Sidechain is interesting idea, but it must still be researched. Yeah, bloating blockchain is something I consider also, as not a good option, due ti that I want to make it small or very small to store files (but still larger than 80 bytes or 1KB), I think such small files, could be integrated, but it's also something to consider.
See for example usage of potential altcoin with 1.5m block time and 1MB blocks, blockchain at full usage it would also use about ~900mb per day. Very big amount imo.
Making it economical not viable to spam network is one of my main concepts. Also I thought about idea making coin unspendable/burned, when you spent it on putting file on blockchain, also to counter inflation, and make it not viable to spam network.
