I'm brand new to BitCoins. I've been considering buying BitCoins for the first time ever by using PayPal. As I considered doing so I was amazed how much personal information people selling BitCoins wanted from me. I ended up feeling they might as well ask me for my PayPal password as well.
I mean, I don't even know these people and some wanted a picture of me standing next to my photo ID. It made me feel rather uncomfortable. I don't like to give out personal information unless absolutely necessary.
I do business using PayPal quite often. Others don't ask for so much personal information.
I don't get it.
The whole concept of using BitCoin is supposedly to be as anonymous as possible, right?
Any comments would be appreciated.

The whole concept of using BitCoin is supposedly to be as anonymous as possible, right? No. Not at all. That is incorrect. Anyone can see every single bitcoin transaction that you have ever done. You can view all the transactions that have occured. The goal of bitcoin is not anomymity. It is decentralization.

I buy quite a few things online with PayPal. Why the heck do people selling BitCoins want so much personal information from me? I don't feel comfortable giving out such information to strangers.

If you are going to get into bitcoin to do illegal activities, then please just go elsewhere, for there is a way to track things and you will get busted if they want to. Next, you should try to find someone local in which you can buy bitcoin from, for Paypal is reversible and there is not much of a chance you will be able to get someone to trust a newbie to not charge the transaction back, since bitcoin can not be taken back.

Its common that its difficult to get bitcoin with paypal, mainly because paypal transactions can be reversed while bitcoin transactions cant. In order to minimize risks of getting scammed these informations are often requested. Pseudonymity (not the same as anonymity) is indeed a feature of bitcoin, which makes the paypal bitcoin exchange even more difficult. Id suggest you go to a local meet up and get a small amount for cash. Its quick, you can ask questions and no exchange of information is needed. Well, you will probably have to show your face.

Depends on your use case. If you just want to pay for something now, there is no reason to switch to bitcoin. If you want to pay for something when the price increased by 10% it might be worth the effort. Other than that, there are other ways to get bitcoin, e.g. offer services, sell (digital) goods.

This is the first I've heard of PayPal reversing a payment. if this is true why aren't most businesses complaining about PayPal reversing payments?

Which exchange has asked you for your paypal password? I don't think any exchange ask you such private things and you should not provide these.
Buying bitcoin nowadays is not easy if you want to stay anonymous because they are requiring lots of documents, ID.
I wouldn't prefer to use paypal to buy bitcoins because they are anti-bitcoin(I consider) but it isn't impossible to buy bitcoin through Paypal.

I didn't say they asked for my PayPal password. I said they might as well have. Some of these strangers want me to practically give them the keys to my house in order to buy BitCoins. It doesn't sound very safe to me.

It doesn't sound very safe to me. Of course it isn't safe but for those exchanges that might asked for paypal password then you could say to them do you want my debit card details lol. I have read that now some exchanges besides verification ID they also ask to hold the ID and take a pic or video as well which I consider absurd. I would suggest you to try and find someone who lives near you, your city or in your country and deal with him physically.

This is the first I've heard of PayPal reversing a payment. if this is true why aren't most businesses complaining about PayPal reversing payments? Same reason they dont complain about Credit Card companies reversing payments. It does not happen that often and there usually is at least an address involved.

Are those actually people or do you use services? Services might be required by law (AML/KYC) to gather these information. If you trust paypal to have your back in peer-to-peer trades, bitcoin is probably not for you indeed.

Having traded bitcoins with paypal, the sole purpose of such an investigation is to make sure you haven't set up a person to scam others. A lot of people have access to fake ID's and they set up fake paypal accounts. They make a payment for buying bitcoins and then charge back after receiving bitcoins. If they used their real identity and did the same, they could be under legal trouble incase the buyer files a legal case. Most of these hackers or scammers aren't prepared to have photos of the real guy standing next to the ID, so they give up their scams when asked for one. But even that isn't the safest way these days as the scammers for some reason are able to obtain even such photos these days.
