A few of you know that for a month I have been traveling around southern Africa spreading the word about Bitcoin. I recently spoke at a Bitcoin gathering in Maputo Mozambique where I met many people who want Bitcoin now. I believe out of about 50 interested people in attendance only 2 had some Bitcoin. I was able to convince one person to start to accept Bitcoin for his business.  It is a small step toward big things for this country with huge potential:

Speaking of potential... there may be a Maputo Bitcoin conference in the works. Stay tuned.

PS- I am speaking in Harare Zimbabwe at this event next week: http://blockchainsummerschool.com/

It's always great to be able to read some first-hand experience of Bitcoin adoption in foreign countries. I find it very interesting that out of 50 people interested in Bitcoin, only 2 own some BTC. That indicates that demand is greater than supply, which is hardly surprising in a country with no Bitcoin mining operations or exchanges, few tourists and high fiat inflation. While BTC is attractive for these people as a savior from fiat inflation, obtaining Bitcoin is really hard. Offering goods and services on the world market for BTC might be the only reasonable way to obtain the currency. Another problem might be expensive and underdeveloped Internet access and high prices (compared to mean income) for Bitcoin-suitable smartphones.

Of course it's great to see apartments offered for BTC, however I'm sure it will take a very long time to find a customer, as Mozambique is not a primary tourist destination. In addition I consider the pricing quite high, given the mean income in the country...

You definitely have to talk to the people at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, because I have travelled through that Airport as

a gateway to Africa, and I have not seen any BTM's or any of the shops accepting Bitcoin for anything. I would have thought the biggest

Airport in Africa would at least have something where you can use Bitcoin, but I was disappointed to say the least.  Roll Eyes

Well done on making others aware in Africa Smiley  i am sure it is hard for sole traders in Africa to start accepting it as they probably need a cash flow in currency that their suppliers will accept.  again well done .

A BTC gathering? Was that a paid event or an informal meetup?
I believe BTC needs free events to attract as many people as possible. Even more so in poor countries.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

Mozambique has a lot of sources that we do use as coffee and chocolate, this deal might be the first and will really expose bitcoin potencial over the region, as long some bitcoiners does travel and rent those spaces, but its amazing to see a merchant accepting bitcoina already, and have some people with bitcoin already.
