Hello,

I wanted a method to store Monero offline, so I downloaded monero-wallet-cli and created myself a wallet.

I transferred 0.30 Monero to test yesterday, and it still hasn't arrived today.  Any ideas why this didn't work and what could have gone wrong?

Any reason why not use https://moneroaddress.org/  for an offline wallet as was sugested in your previous thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1618542.0  Looks realy simple to me.

If you will not sync Monero blockchain you cant see your most recent balance. To sync you need to log to internet, so that already give soem risk.

Apologies Febo, its purely my own ignorance, I didn't understand how to do it.

I'm slowly getting a better understanding..  So once i've generated this new address and taken note of all the specific addresses and Mnemonic seed etc..  What piece of software do I use to attached the wallet and operate it on my offline PC?  Is there any windows compatible?  I would prefer Windows but can do linux if required.

Or do I send the coins to the address and then simply activate it on a web based system once I want to make use of it?  I'm sure this is simpler, maybe this was the point I was missing..

Thanks for your help and patience!

When you will make an offline wallet you cant do much with it. beside send more coins there.  After you send coins there you can use this to see if they actualy arived:  http://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/954/how-to-use-the-view-key-to-see-amount-sent-to-cold-storage/957#957

Point of offline storing of coins is to be as safe as posible. You should not make an offline wallet for coins you plan to spend next week. So when you will want to spend this coins you will need to link this wallet to internet and with that you will give chance to compromise it.

You can do that in any wallet most simple is right now https://mymonero.com where you will not need to synce Monero blockchain or you can acces your offline wallet in any other wallet. You will just need to put in your mnemonic seed.

If you will want to spend just part of coins, you should at that moment make new offline wallet on https://moneroaddress.org/ and send coins ment to keep in offlien storage tehre, and leave and spend the rest on your old offline wallet that once linked to interent become hot wallet Smiley

PS: I just read that using https://mymonero.com when decide to open your offline/cold wallet will cost you 10 XMR.
PS2: I also see some other about spending in offline wallet on http://monero.stackexchange.com/ . Apparently is very recent and is beyond of my knowledge. But you can search those questions and answers there  and learn.

Thanks for all your help.  I'm going to try and figure out a different retrieval method, 10XMR is extortionate!

I totally agree. That fee is there, because griefers could attack the site with it if it woudl be free.

There are other wallets. You will just need to sync blockchain overnight or if you have SSD should be synced in 1-2h.

Hello again,

Is there any way to attach monero-wallet-cli to a different server rather than having to run monerod?  I really like monero-wallet-cli but the amount of bandwidth requires by running monerod is HUGE.  I'm sure theres a command of some kind?

Thanks

Hi, I used an external daemon more than a year ago when I tried out an unofficial GUI wallet.
So I don't know 100% how it goes with monero-wallet-cli.
But that old wallet used MoneroClub daemon and google showed me this page: https://www.moneroclub.com/node
From what I've read there, you can use it with monero-wallet-cli too.

Just a friendly warning: in theory using an external untrusted daemon is not 100% safe/anonymous. It's a risk you take or not.

Assuming that your intention/goal is to store XMR in an offline/air-gapped PC (cold storage), generating an offline wallet with monero-wallet-cli and then using its associated address and view key to create a corresponding watch-only wallet on an online machine (monerod/monero-wallet-cli) to monitor it has worked for me so far.

Most likely, the external/remote nodes mentioned on here are trustworthy. But that sort of contradicts the principle of going to all the trouble of having a cold wallet in the first place to secure your tokens. Other than owning the remote node that you're connecting to, the best way to secure your transactions (hot wallet) is to run your own local node with the client. But that's just me.

Anyway, the following cold/view-only wallet creation procedure (Windows) has been working for me. However, proceed at your own risk and do your own research/test accordingly before committing your funds to it:

Offline PC:

Create a wallet with monero-wallet-cli.exe and export the related address and view key (only and nothing else) to the online PC.

Online PC:

1. run monerod.exe and let it sync

2. open a command terminal in the directory containing the monero binaries (monerod.exe and monero-wallet-cli.exe)

3. in the command terminal, enter: monero-wallet-cli.exe --generate-from-view-key <any name for the watch-only wallet here>

4. follow the instructions and enter the cold wallet address and view key and create password

5. enter the most recent block height to save time (instead of scanning from the beginning of the blockchain). It should show a zero balance after the scan/refresh

6. exit from the command terminal.

From here on, the watch-only wallet can be started normally (i.e. running monero-wallet-cli.exe and logging on with the watch-only wallet credentials created above). It would then say: "Opened watch-only wallet: <offline/cold wallet address>" and starts auto-refresh as usual.
