So right now I am mining BTC and my 7870 has started causing my screen to artifice. I am just wondering how concerned I should be about this. I really don't want to hurt/break my graphics card.

Thanks

i'm using guiminer right now. I haven't figured out how to use cgminer yet... but my main question is that is it actually bad for my card?

Its sign thats something is wrong /gpu stress/dying gpu/. U shouldnt run 24/7 mining when u have artifacts.

Are you using Windows Aero?

If so disable it.. it requires gpu power. When mining it uses all the gpu so Aero can go glitchy, might not be artifacting.

Yes I was! This seems to have helped it. Thank you very much sir.

Clock down the memory, if it stays the mem can be damanged by heat. I could mine just fine or sometimes makes the GPU crash.

You should check the temperature of your GPU just to be certain it is not overheating!

I found the full fix

Update driver to Catalyst 13.3 beta

Yes, the issue has come up in various forums. Arbitrary example: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2303949

Several other people have also suggested the 13.3 beta driver will fix the problem. I'm downloading it from here: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst13-3WINBetaDriver.aspx

I hope to install it Real Soon Now on a Sapphire HD 7970 vapor-x GHz edition card that is presently artifacting (especially with Firefox) on the Sapphire 13.1 driver, whether or not I am mining with it.

Edit: I just did the update to 13.3 beta and the artifacts are much fewer and smaller so far, but still present in my Firefox window. Puter is heavily loaded i7 with Guiminer and BOINC (8 Einstein @ home tasks)
and some other smaller apps running concurrently.

This happens to me in Windows, when I reboot to Linux and mine there I have 0 artefacts. I also get faster hashing in Linux - so that is a bonus too. Seems like a driver oddity more than anything to me.
