So I've decided to start solo mining, and I followed this tutorial to do so.

http://maunderingcabal.blogspot.com/2013/02/bitcoin-mining-log-9-how-to-solo-mine.html

So, usuing GUIminer, I started up my bitcoin client as a server. It started with no probs, and I went down to "other" in the server list and entered the IP and port. Then I entered some more stuff, and hit "Start mining." It started fine, but it says I still get shares like I did when I was mining on (example) slush's pool. Not like what this tutorial said would be coming up...am I doing it right? Please help, thanks.

With solo mining, you either find 25BTC or nothing. Nobody should solo mine BTC at this point - I dont think even an ASIC would be able to

...I wasn't asking how much you got from mining BTC solo, I already knew you only got 25 at a time. I'm not new to this. I'm just having different results than the tutorial said I would, so back to my question, did I set it up right?

You don't get shares if you solo...

I'm saying that unless you have an ASIC you'll never find a solo block. Even if you did have an ASIC I still don't think you can find a solo block. The dificullty is just too high now for anyone without a supercomputer to solo bitcoins.  Cheesy

Something is wrong if you are still getting shares.  Did you add rpcallowip=*, rpcuser=your_user_name, and rpcpassword=your_password to bitcoin.conf?

If you mining on the computer with the bitcoin server then the ip address and port should be 127.0.0.1 and 8332 respectively.  If I remember correctly.

*IP address of your miner, assuming you mine on a separate computer from your server.

Hope this helps,

Could you provide screenshots of guiminer's main page and the miner's settings page?
