As I understand it the devs want to prevent mining centralization, and this is the reason for delaying public mining. P2P is supposed to be at the core of their mission, according to what I've read. To be honest, I hope their idealistic mission doesn't prevent adoption. On the other hand, I do respect their willingness to stay true to what they believe. This is what got me interested to begin with. They have a plan and they are committed to it. My opinion is that the value builds slowly over time or the idealism prevents them from getting adoption at all, just like you said.
