I'm using the Litecoin client to mine but when I try solo using the server 127.0.0.1 username:username and password:password a message appears stating i'm mining solo but nothing appears to be happening. When I switch to pool and use these settings I get a message confirming I'm hashing at a rate of 44 khash/sec. Is this right? If I solve a block will it automatically credit to wallet and how can I be mining in a pool using the same details as mining solo?

I can't figure this out and all hell is greatly appreciated.

0 hashes / second?

I'm using the client from litecoin.org, I let it sync, and I'm still getting 0 hashes / second doing solo mining.
XP system, 2.4 GHz, 1 gig of ram.  Any ideas?
