hello all....yes im a newbie dumbass...srry, dont hate. ive been into this bitcoin shit for a month or so and i still dont know all i need to know. here is my sich. I have a bunch of bitcoins, and ether, in Coinbase, but I don't feel like they are secure there. I just purchased the Ledger Nano S as part of my plan to secure my shit. I havent received it yet, but, im pretty sure ile set that thing up pretty easily. But then what? do i use their proprietary wallet crap? or do i get hooked up with Mycelium or Electrum? In any case what's the procedure for getting my stuff out of Coinbase and over to...Mycelium, Electrum, or Ledger Nano thing? Im not trying to be spending and receiving bitcoins much, i just wanna sit on them for awhile hoping value goes up.

Thanks for reading. And I appreciate any and all really helpful input that helps me out a lot. Thanks, Brad.

p.s. I love you

You should use Electrum. Since I don't have a Ledger Nano S, I can't give you specific instructions on how to set it up, you will have to find out from elsewhere.

To move your coins from Coinbase (or any other wallet) to another wallet, just get an address from your new wallet and send the coins there.

thx achow. so its that simple. great! wait.. nawwww its never that simple. i mean maybe, but...o.k. so i guess i will get my ledger nano s in the mail soon, ile go through the initial set it up as per their instructions, then, somehow ile link my ledger nano s with electrum, and then i will somehow send over my bitcoins and ether to electrum. Is that the correct order of operations?

AFAIK with a hardware device you won't see the seed words anywhere except on the device itself. The Ledger Nano S has a screen, so when you first set it up it should prompt you to backup the seed words from the device itself. The point of a hardware wallet is that your computer will never be able to see any of the private keys ever.

The video you were watching was probably for a normal Electrum wallet setup.

Electrum does not support Ethereum. You will have to find a wallet that does in order to use Ethereum.

Your shit is safe with a hardware wallet, but I still feel uncomfortable about third parties being involved with my coins. I prefer to transfer all my bitcoins to paper wallets for long term storage and not into some hardware device that might fail when you need it the most.

I own a Trezor and it gives you more flexibility than these paper wallets, so it is not a bad choice. It is much better than the online wallets, where you have no control over your own private keys. ^hmmmmmm^

Why don't you just download bitcoin core and secure it with one hell of a passphrase? That should keep your bitcoin safely stored or am I missing something here? That's what I'd do.

Electrum does not support Ethereum. You will have to find a wallet that does in order to use Ethereum.

Exodus [exodus.io] hardware wallet supports Ethereum! [along with Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, and Dash]
