Split BTC

I've transferred my BTC from bitcoin-qt to electrum. I'd like to split them into all the new coins. The electrum docs say you should see multiple chains under the server list. I'm only seeing one.

Any ideas?

1. Electrum only supports Bitcoin. Can you link this doc? You may have misunderstood what it's saying.
2. The fork snapshot has already happened. This means that you won't receive any BTG in your wallet. But you may receive in your previous wallet if your coins were there in the last few days.
3. After the fork, you will need to import your Bitcoin-qt wallet private key in a BTG supported wallet to be able to spend them

I think you will not split your fork coin just to send your bitcoin to electrum because electrum is only bitcoin supported.
you should get or backup the private key you use from your bitcoin-qt and import it in bitcoin gold wallet or bitcoin cash wallet if what honestly new coin you wanted to split..
I think it could be possible to get your new coin(bitcoin gold) in coinomi the same as bitcoin cash before..
I don't seen any wallet yet for bitcoin gold but other people are already sold their bitcoin gold and i think it will be more cheaper soon..
i heard someone sold their bitcoin gold in yobit they just transfer their bitcoin first in new wallet and backup private keys

And check the wallet if what possible wallet could be supported and import your private keys sample coinomi..
And should your bitcoin gold is there..

You both talk about coming out of bitcoin-qt. That's a done deal. All my BTC is in electrum now.

I was originally concerned about Bitcoin Cash (BCC?). But now we have two more forks, Bitcoin Gold and the one with the goofy name. So it sounds like I need a new client for each fork.

That document was rendered obsolete for BCH (and most likely BTG) after they (BCH Devs) implemented Two-way replay protection for BCH that used a different transaction signing algorithm.

Electrum is unable to create valid BCH transactions... And will most likely be unable to generate valid BTG transactions (given they're looking at changing address prefixes and implementing other changes to provide replay protection).

So, yes... You're probably going to need to get a separate client for each coin... Or use a client that is apparently planning on supporting "everything" (currently BTC, BCH and planned support for BTG, unsure about the 2X fork) like Coinomi etc

I want to move my BTC *between* two wallets on my same installation. The electrum docs talk about doing this in preparation and for protection before providing your private keys to a separate BCH client.

How do I do that without using a network transaction and paying more fees?

If I understand you well you want to move your BTC but keep them in same wallet?I do not know if that make any sense because to do that you need to create new wallet using option New/Restore and in order to not pay any transaction fee you need to import your private keys in new wallet.This way you did not do nothing,only difference is that you have your BTC in wallet protected by seed and in other unprotected by seed,but with same private keys.

I general what you need to do is to send your BTC to another address/wallet - it can be Electrum or any other wallet -- then you need to download wallet for Bitcon Cash(it is recommended to install on other PC).When your BTC is safe in new wallet use your seed/private keys in BCH wallet.

The short answer is: You can't.

The long answer is that the only way to move coins from one address to another (ie. Moving to a new wallet) is via an "on chain" transaction... To get a transaction confirmed, you're going to have to pay the "miner's fee".

The are ways to mitigate fees (custom fees + accelerators, timing transaction when network load is low etc).

Also note that moving your BTC to a new wallet is not technically required. It is only recommended for security purposes in case the fork client you choose is "evil" and tries to send your seed/private keys to a thief. The theory being that if your BTC has already been moved to a different wallet, they can only steal your fork coins.

Thank you. That's what I needed to hear. I've already moved my coins from bitcoin-qt to electrum. So I'm going to use the private keys from bitcoin-qt for the split.

But in addition, you should know that even if the BTG snapshot did catch your coins in Electrum wallet, you wouldn't have seen different chains for the time being simply because there is no BTG chain yet. They will launch it after November, the 1st. The method you read about probably should mainly be used with no replay protection forks.

I will do the BTG split when it comes out. (Today Nov. 1?) I'm trying to do Bitcoin Cash (BCC?) at the moment.
