basically i need a new atx power cable (24pin) to connect the PSU to the avalon unit. so i was wondering, can i just use any modular atx cable or must i get the original cable?
i know for the atx cable, at the motherboard's end, all pins are standardised. my concern is whether the pins on the atx port on the PSU are standardised as well.

Nope. The resulting 6pin PCIe connector will always end up the same, but IIRC most manufacturers will make their modular plugs different so you can't use a competitor's cable. You have to use their specific one.
