ok so my buddy had an older computer that he donated to me because he needed the space.

It has a processor of some kind. About half a gig of some older type of ram. and like a 30 gig hard drive.

my first impulse was "yes! I get to play with armory!"

so i get it set up, and slide on over to the armory page to get, "Armory has become increasingly difficult to use, unless you are on a 64-bit operating system and have 6+ GB of RAM (4+ GB for Linux users).   We are aware of the usability issues and should have it resolved in the next few weeks."

Basically, there only seem to be packages for 64 bit windows (which obviously this computer can't do), regular old ubuntu 12.04 which I was thinking about trying after making this post but havent yet because there seems to be a "Linux – Offline Bundle for Ubuntu 10.04"

that sounded more like what I needed (10.04 probably being about as old as the computer I have), so I downloaded the 10.04 from the link, only to find out, after installing, that it's the server version, and presented me with a command prompt.

Anyway I do not have THAT much time to experiment around and dick with this, what would you suggest is my best course of action here? Is it hard to get a GUI running from a linux command prompt for the sole purpose of running armory without using the internet (so no sudo apt-get, eek!)? Where would I look to figure out how to do that? Or can I just run armory from a command prompt?

Is there any reason (other than for a smoother running computer) that I should use 10.04 in favor of the 12.04 for an offline wallet? I assume there is or they wouldn't have put it there?

Or maybe the 64-bit windows version will miraculously work on an older computer with windows xp on it??
That would be best because of the increased printer compatibility (I happen to have a printer laying around that I would need to use the internet to get it to work with linux).

What do you guys suggest is my best course of action?

Or, I could just install whatever OS I damn well feel like, and just use bitaddress.org or something to print a wallet and then treat it like a piggie bank. But the whole point of this is so I can sign transactions without putting the wallet online so bah.

Fully offline should be OK.

I personally use a brainwallet with a very long and personally unique passphrase.

I would do that but I would have trouble remembering the passphrase, and I want to have access to my bitcoin while still keeping them relatively secure.

I'm not wealthy anyways, I don't see my wallet ever having more than a couple grand in value, and that's when I'm all baller (for me).

Why don't you just install the desktop 10.04 instead of server?
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04.0/

The reason for 10.04 is that they have the armory offline bundle available which includes the dependencies you need to install, since you don't have network access.

For no other reason than that I couldn't find the link. Thank you!
