I'm not sure if this is a dumb question or not. I was synchronizing my wallet and my computer froze, at the same time I was receiving a transaction. When I reopened by wallet the transaction went through the confirmation process but my balance did not increase. I also noticed that the previous received transaction showing in my history disappeared from the list, and this transaction was for a nearly equal amount. Is my BTC lost?

Is my BTC lost?

Most likely not.

I'd try shutting down the wallet and then starting it back up again
That's not likely to help, but it won't hurt and it's a lot easier than the next thing to try so we might as well get it out of the way in case it does help.

Assuming that doesn't help and that you are running the Bitcoin-Qt wallet, you can try shutting it down and then restarting it with the rescan option.

What operating system are you using? (Windows, Apple OSX, Linux)

If you are not using the Bitcoin-Qt wallet, then what wallet are you using?

Thanks for your response. I shut down and restarted the wallet a number of times and even tried restarting my OS. I'm running windows xp and using multibit for a wallet. When using the official bitcoin wallet client the blockchain never finishes downloading. It makes good progress until there are about 20k blocks left to account for before synch is complete, and it just hangs there for days without completing. I've tried to install it on multiple computers and always get the same result.

I'm not as literate with computers as many of the users on this forum so forgive me if I don't understand some things right away.

So what is my next step?

using multibit for a wallet.

Aha!  I've heard others report this problem with MutliBit.  I'm not a MutliBit expert, but it seems to be a "quirk" of the software that it occasionally losses track of transactions.

The MultiBit Support page says right at the top:

Quote
Sometimes a transaction seems to get "stuck" leading to concern that it hasn't been sent or received. This is almost always fixed by using the "Reset Blockchain" option from the Tools menu.

I'd therefore suggest using the "Reset Blockchain" option on the "Tools" menu.

lol Sorry for the extra information, I just like to be thorough.

Resetting the blockchain worked. Thank you very much for your help.
