So as the title implies I live in the not-so-great state of New York and would like to try to buy some Monero for trading/speculation. I usually use Yobit for trading, but they don’t deal with XMR. Most other exchanges don’t allow users to register from the state of NY, as NY requires businesses who deal with bitcoin to get a “bit-license” (just another freedom gone thanks to NY). I’m looking to find a creditable exchange that will allow me to register. Any advice?

I'm also a NY resident and suffer the same issues. It's a ridiculous license but there are ways to get around it. Many people use a VPN, which allows them to use any of the major exchanges. Personally, I just use Bittrex, which does have the bit license. It also has XMR, which you are looking for and a good amount of other cryptos with decent volume.

I am not sure about that, but do not forget that you can use two exchanges.  That brings the fees up, but it can be done.  Find the exchange that you can use to change your FIAT to crypto and back again, then use another exchange for the XMR, on the XMR exchange, switch to another crypto, like Doge, I add the comment about Doge because the minimum withdrawal might be lower than BTC, and then move the doge or whatever to the other exchange and out.

XMR is listed on Kraken but I am not aware if NY residents are allwed or not. If you haven't tried it may be good to check it.
It sucks that some states are acting like this. I know an owner of an INTL website quite large in north carolina he is looking since several months a solution so he can pay people with bitcoin but facing the same problem as your

Nope, Kraken doesn't have Bitlicense and won't allow me to register.

I am glad to see I can use Bittrex as a backup if I need. I've always used Btc-e and Yobit, however recently I found Cryptopia; and since their based in New Zealand they can ignore the bit license requirement. Cryptopia is small, however they seem to deal most every crypto, so I've been using them as a backup to buy anything I can't on Yobit and BTC-E.

Correct, Kraken is a no go for NY residents. I personally purchase my BTC/ETH from Coinbase-->GDAX or Gemini depending on how fast i want to purchase and then transfer over to Bittrex.
