"The verdict is out. Google fined $2.7 billion by the EU for favoring its own shopping service over search results"

(full transparency: I also posted this in off-topic but thought it'd be appropriate here as well)

It's like a dream because every search engine must have its importance.
How a database can be merged for free. It needs a miracle to do this  Cheesy

Looks like a neat project actually kind of like Maidsafe for storage, although the one I usually recall is bugmenot
As for the google part well they are the hegemeon so for the amount of views results and income they get for putting their stuff as the first few results on the top bar its not bad. People rarely go to page 2 etc so a pittance in the large scheme of things.

Google through its browser, search engine, and Email monitors all activities of its users. Yeah, a decentralized search engine would provide more privacy to users and no censorship, information would be freely available to everyone and no centralized advertising. I was going through their wiki page, found couple of disadvantages.

Quote
1. There is no NAT traversal functionality built in.
2. As there is no central server and the YaCy network is open to anyone, malicious peers are (theoretically) able to insert inaccurate or commercially biased search results.

Users would consume a lot of bandwidth, how does a decentralized browser would keep up with this, donations?

Quote
Result verification is done client-side on every search, which increases network traffic on the computer running YaCy and makes YaCy slower

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/YaCy

From a privacy and free information point of view, the concept of YaCy is really good. Decentralized search engine, decentralized browser, decentralized email service. Guess decentralisation could be applied to everything. Grin

mesh network would decentralize everything, or any client in the same vein as open bazar would also do good

you are still under the control of internet service provider, so not fully decentralized

It is quite a big dream if we can have a decentralized search engine even if it not a fully decentralized one. Maybe we might have a good competitor for Google if someday this can be established and can make some market traction. Hope it can happen soon. I am sure there are already many developers who are thinking about this.

Glad you guys received it well. I honestly did not look into them too well but it illustrated the point I was trying to make well.

I wonder if someone tried to incorporate something like that with a cryptocurrency backing it - what function would that cryptocurrency serve?
