I was looking at the hashrate distribution of litecoin pools and it seems as though F2Pool has taken control of over 50% of the network hashrate. Does this mean that litecoin is effectively dead?

I found this here: https://www.litecoinpool.org/pools.

f2pool is the only Chinese pool that doesn't run it's own hardware. It represents a group of 1000s of smaller miners. It's great to see the small miners not support the giant farms that the other Chinese pools represent. These small miners seem to prefer a local pool in their native language. f2pool has historically encourage miners to seek other pools every time they approach the 50 percent threshold. Unfortunately, until another independant Chinese pool opens these miners seem inclined to stay where they are.

To assert that this makes LTC dead seems somewhat absurd.

I did not know that, it's good to know. I guess there is hope.

i should add that this is not new!
i just did a little search and realized that F2Pool has been having this high percentage of hashrate for a long time, it fluctuates a lot though but it usually is above 51%
most articles are from earlier this month
June: www.livebitcoinnews.com/f2pool-still-controls-51-litecoin-hashrate/
Jan: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1742192.0

also i would like to add that GHASH.io which was a big bitcoin mining pool (similar to F2Pool today but for bitcoin) used to have more than 51% hashrate at some point and the world didn't end Wink
