Author Topic: Could not get unpowered 1x16 riser cable to work  (Read 1477 times)

I got 6 7850's, and I tried to put them all on one mobo using unpowered riser cables.  I'm running Xubuntu 12.04, cgminer 3.0.0, Catalyst 12.08.  The motherboard is a GIGABYTE FM2 AMD A85X with 3 PCI-E x1 slots and 3 PCI-E x16 slots.  I'll provide links.

Here are my results

0  (x1)  Yes
1  (x16) Yes
2  (x1)  No
3  (x1)  Does not even show up
4  (x16) Yes
5  (x16) Yes

So I disconnected the #2 and #3 cards, and this is what happened

0  (x1)  Yes
1  (x16) Yes
2  (x16) No
3  (x16) No

So I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.  I was using 2 750w power supplies.  If there is some trick to making this work, I would really like to know, but for the time being I'm going back to using 3 cards per board. 

Thoughts and comments, are very much appreciated.

You could try the presence pin shorting trick.

You could try the presence pin shorting trick.

Not sure what that is.  Tried looking it up.  Found mention of it, but nothing telling me what it is.

It did lead me to some possible bios settings that might help.

I see now, but the cards showed up in all but that one slot.  Its when I went to test if everything was working with that I had problems.

aticonfig --lsa
Shows cards in all slots but the #2

But when I test with 
Code:
sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt
and
Code:
./cgminer -n
is when things go wrong

I'm going to try some bios setting first, and then maybe the pin shorting.

What does the:

aticonfig --list-adapters
say?

Or:
Code:
lspci
?
Are there 6 vga adapters found?

Anyway, it could be that you cant use all PCIE x1 slots at the same time. It depends on the motherboard.

Everything shows up.  It just doesn't work, and I couldn't find any settings in the BIOS that would help.  Oh well I guess I need to buy another motherboard.  Would have been nice, and saved me some money, but nothing ever seems to go as planned.

So both aticonfig and lspci are showing 4 cards.
I cant be sure about all six cards, but at least an additional card should work with the presence pin trick.

Just recently bumped into the same issue (a fifth card not recognized) and the trick did the...trick Smiley

Some slots may share lanes/resources with other devices, which can screw things up.  Some decent motherboard manufacturers (Asus) list what's shared with what in the manual.  Though, you're using Gigashyte, so you're probably back to the trial and error method.
