So I have a friend....

Has just bought more btc from an exchange with KYC.
The funds/purchase all legitimate, but concerned about future privacy.
If transfer directly to a wallet, then it is easy (for gov't) to find who owns that wallet.
Can transfer through a few wallets, which just makes a trail and adds a few minutes to research time.
Yes, could claim that it was a payment and deny ownership or theft if needed in the future, but much prefer a way so any questions do not even arise.

But what are other options?
-Use a mixer?
-Transfer to another exchange without KYC and sell for Monero etc. then buy btc back?

What other ways to increase privacy for exchange-bought btc?

Using a mixer seems to be the best option if you'r looking to hide your identity, the reason I dont know why you or your friend bought btc that way if you/him were looking for privacy, try OTC exchanges next time.

Bitcoin is hard to tracking so that divided it into many wallets will be good .

also some users buy old wallet .

but using mixer is better option in your list

Is there even an exchange that doesn't implement KYC? I highly doubt it. You'll have much better luck buying Monero from a third party and using that to buy back BTC, which you will sell to another third party for fiat. Exchanges are a no-no if you absolutely require privacy. Either way, there are too many steps that it may be more ideal to use mixers like Chipmixer instead.

Also, I honestly don't think the government will single you out unless a) you're dealing with an ungodly amount of money, or b) you're into shady stuff. I know that exchanges are hard to trust nowadays with that entire IRS mess, but it also proves the government will have to go through a court to obtain your data. It's not that simple.

There are few ways to make bitcoin transaction completely anonymous. The first one is using the bitcoin mixer service; it mixes many bitcoin transactions at once and eliminate the transaction metadata footprint. The second one is bitcoin mining when you mined bitcoin it is completely anonymous it up to you to use it wisely. The last one is exchanging your bitcoin with Dash on exchange platform and after a day or two, change back to your bitcoin and use different wallet address to make a transaction (No fully anonymous, sometimes).

Doing both of what you said is the easiest & best ways to do it (and arguably the only ones).
Monero is completely anonymous but converting back to BTC after buying XMR may compromise his identity again so you'd have to use it to make a purchase directly, or use a non-KYC exchange such as Cryptopia.

Otherwise, a Bitcoin mixer would be sufficient, I'd recommend this one: https://chipmixer.com/

Mixer is one of the most popular services today. Although the status of bitcoin is anonymous, but we can see the flow of the bitcoin address that we use. So if you want a very privacy thing then the mixer can be an alternative. This is a breakthrough and more and more people are using similar services.

Run it through more than one mixer service IF you/he are that worried about privacy. Remember, we do not know who are

running these mixer services and IF they are who we think they are. These mixer services might be government agencies,

collecting data about criminals. The more mixer services use, the better the chance that you might be using a non-government

services.  Wink
