Hi,

Generally when bitcoins go up then alts go down or up?

When alts go up then bitcoins go down or up?

What is the general pattern? Is it always opposite?

It varies, there is usually a relation but sometimes it follow it and other times it goes the opposite and is usually due to the reasons for for the fall in bitcoin.

For example lately alts have gone down worse than bitcoin during falls because the panic from a bitcoin fork has affected the whole market, but in the past during good times it was mostly an inverse relationship where alts would go down when bitcoin was up and vice versa.

There is no fixed relationship between bitcoin price and altcoin price. The market creates various situations which are totally different from the last time.

Altcoins are anymore as powerful as bitcoin is, so when market faces a crash or moon, every coin moves together but it is still unpredictable.

I think they are positively correlated. But some good altcoins will rise faster than bitcoin.

Not opposite.
If bitcoin price goes down or up fastly, altcoin prices drop. When bitcoin price is stable people thinks that no benefit of keeping bitcoins and start to invest on alts so altcoin prices goes up...

Like you said fear of a hard fork which dips bitcoin price so why should alts dip as well when there is no fear of hard forks to the popular altcoins, that means in theory alts should go up correct?

Ok so the past trend of opposites is an old trend that rarely happens anymore?

No there is no scientific pattern but based on some analysis and if you observe when bitcoins price is continuously rising some of the alts were down and when bitcoins is dump altcoins are pump ,Its not always the same markets are too volatile but now because of bitcoins fork in august 1 it is connected to the alts because altcoin depends in btc trading that why almost all of the alts are also down.

You will have to document the patterns.

Understand the underlying reasons to why it changes.

But that costs so much work, with little return.

Would apply concentrated efforts on discovering future updates for an established coin and find undervalued cryptocurrencies. These are the most profitable way to gain some money in this business.

Making free money is not so free after all. Smiley
If you want to go beyond betting blindly, then you need to research.
Newcomer cryptos can have more potential. But that's never guaranteed.
No risk no fun.

I don't really think that there is a pattern to it,
I have seen the bitcoin goes down as well as the alts ,
And sometimes the alts would go down but the bitcoin would go up or vice versa.
